No rear turn signal flashers while braking
I've looked through ERAs signal troubleshooting guides but none of the circumstances given there match what I'm seeing, so I thought I'd ask for suggestions:
Brake lights work, headlights work, and all four signals work. If I turn the running lights on, and then signal, the flashing turn signals are visible because the flashers are brighter than the running lights, as they should be. However, when I apply the brakes, which are brighter than the running lights, I can no longer see the pulsing rear signals through the strength of the brake light. If I look directly at the filament through the trunk, I can see that it is pulsing, but it's barely perceptible. From outside the car the pulsing is so weak that it just translates as a steady brake light. The signal switch seems to be doing its job. I assume the continuity checks from ERAs troubleshooter will indicate that the switch is good, or I wouldn't see signal flashing at all (without brakes applied, either). Maybe it's still operating but in a degraded state? Anybody have ideas on how to proceed with troubleshooting? |
If: 1) All four running lights work normally; and 2) All four turn signals work normally; and 3) The rear brake lights work normally, but the rear signal light will not blink when the brake pedal is also being pushed, then I would suspect the trailer light relay has failed. It is fastened to the steering column under the two quick blow fuses. It has three input wires and two output wires. The three inputs are R Turn Signal, L Turn Signal and Brake Light. The outputs are to the two rear high intensity filaments on the bulbs (one left, the other right).

So the manual lists the part as a Standard Ignition TC52 relay. From Standard's website I can see this diagram for it: http://eaccess.smpcorp.com/eCatalogs...D/GF7321-1.pdf It's similar to the setup on my car (and the diagram here: Signal and brake light troubleshooting), but not the same. It's got 5 leads on the input side and 4 on the output side as opposed to the 3 input and 2 output in the car/ERA manual. Granted two of the three extra wires are just grounds. Is this just a design change since the manual was written? Want to avoid ordering the wrong part. The existing relay in the car is only labeled "PL 500B". |

I am resurrecting this thread to thank you guys for the information that is regularly made available here. My brake/turn signal light relay died and I only had to look down a short number of threads to find the part I needed to order to get this fixed. So, thanks a bunch! Patrick that would be you.
