Help Needed from 289 owners
Can any of the fine ERA 289 Cobra owning folks out there tell me where I can find a replacement gas cap for my car (the inner one) I took mine off to fill up, drove off without it, now it is gone. Tried NAPA and they looked at me like I had snakes coming out of my nose.

Just shoot Bob P. a note and ask him for one. I find that if you're extra nice to him then he forgets to send a bill with the part.;) |

It looks to be a standard 2.5 inch gas cap - nothing special about it at all. But I couldn't find a part number to point you to anything more specific.
Here are some photos of mine. The last photo it's standing on edge against my tape measure for a better profile view. It's 2.5 inches in diameter across the top.

The cap listed in the Maintenance Parts section of the manual is a Parts Master 46139.
The cap is pretty standard. Just make sure that the cap that you use is vented.

Smart idea. Within in the first month of owning my ERA 427 I had left the gas cap at a gas station. Did not realize it until the next time I went to fill up and there was no gas cap.

That’s exactly what happened to me. I looked all around the gas station but no cap to be found. My new daily driver doesn’t even have a gas cap to lose.

The gas cap on my 1978 Jeep J10 looks exactly the same. When I lost my ERA gas cap I went to a couple of parts stress before I found one that would fit. Cannot remember where I found one.

I always wondered why the use of the secondary twist cap, surely the original Lemans cap did not have this. Why not reproduce the original style?
My 69 Mach 1 had a factory flip top gas cap, no secondary cap. There was a spring loaded seal that sat against the filler neck when locking the flip top down.

Safety and liability. Ford replaced the Mustangs "flip-open" caps 15 years ago with a replacement unit with a conventional type cap hidden by the flip door. And that's for cars from 1970! They stopped supplying the original factory type caps as service replacement parts because of liability concerns. |

We also found that under racing conditions (left turn), gas was finding its way through the breather on the Comp cap.
