Lower Radiator Hose & Pipe - ERA 289 FIA
I noticed some drips of coolant from the lower radiator hose this weekend, and in looking at the hose and the aluminum pipe it connects into, it felt like there was quite a bit of play - at least more than I was expecting. Do the hoses wear out or become loose or more flexible over time? There was enough wiggle in the hose that the aluminum pipe felt like it made contact with the cross-member of the frame when I gave the pipe a solid shake. Has anyone else experienced this? Solutions? How much clearance should there be between the aluminum pipe and the frame? And how stiff should the lower radiator hose be? Thanks in advance!!

All good. It's a tight fit the way the hose and pipe are routed up and over the frame from the lower back of the radiator. And there was definitely some contact between the aluminum pipe and the frame when I gave it a solid shake. So I cut up a section of some old radiator hose, and fastened it around the pipe to prevent any metal-to-metal contact.

That was what I was going to suggest, but without being able to see the design, I was not sure if it would be applicable. My lower aluminum radiator hose goes through holes n the tower and I cut some rubber hose to wrap around it to prevent metal-to-metal wear.

Do you know if you have a spring in your lower hose to keep it from collapsing under suction? I found an old one and used in mine when I put it together which sort of stiffened the hose up a little. If not and if you aren't having any flow or coolant problem it's probably not worth messing with right now.

Thanks DanEC. For now it's good. But I will work to get the stiffer hose and the routing laid out a little better when it's time to re-do it.
