What's the latest on ERA Slabside power steering. What is recommended?

We did a single conversion on a 427 many years ago using an electric Flaming River (in-line) power unit. The owner was pretty happy, but the whole setup was well over $2500. To make it look "correct", it's a lot of work.

*I notice that the latest FR unit has provisions for being speed-sensitive (off a trans sensor). A big improvement, IMHO.

I took off the flaming river manual steering on my VSE and installed from summitt or Charlies a t bird power rack. Also bought a pump compatible to my small block chebby motor. It took some fussing to get all the fasteners to work but it works like a charm.

Thanks Bob. Peter already has my deposit. Just waiting for a build number. Hope by end of summer. I will have to bite the bullet because my wife insists on power steering or no Cobra. This will be our second ERA. We picked up #407 as a roller in 1994, but this time it will have to be fully Turn Key. Can't go crawling around on the floor like I use to, also have replacement shoulder. Had #407 for 26 years not a single crack or problem.

Bob do you think the Flaming River Microsteer Electric Power Steering Kit W/speed sensor SKU FR 40200kt would fit under the slabside dash or would it have to be in the engine bay?

May not need power steering with a small block street Cobra.

My 289 FIA has Mickey Thompson 235/60s in the front and the steering is as light as a 60s VW Beetle.

I find that if I put grease on my treads the tires turn much easier.:cool:

Thanks for the info CSX2345, but i like patrickt's idea best. This is going to be my second Cobra after 26 years with first ERA #407. One replacement shoulder, other is shot, and wife insists power steering assist or no car. What can I say she loves me and my toys. Wants to be able to really enjoy driving this Cobra.

It was pretty tight behind the dash in the 427. My recollection is that the tightness was vertical, so the steering column couldn't go higher than the middle of the dash "slot".
I'll check on the different exhaust configuration of the Slabside. I would prefer to move the booster forward of the footbox if there was enough space. Probably much simpler to do, although heat could complicate things.

Bob if it would fit in front of the foot box we could wrap the headers with heat tape and/or provide an aluminum heat shield around the electric motor.
