Windshield Tensioner added
Last month we drive 838 from Indy to the coast on Route 66 and up the PCH. It was about 6000 miles and a lot of that with the top.
I noticed evidence of the windshield frame spreading apart and decided to add a windshield tensioner. There are many photos of original Cobras and MGs with them. I copied one of the Cobra photos.
It turned out quite nice and cost $6 for stainless plate and a rod.

John, I’ve had that happen on my car too. How does the tensioner attach at the top? It kind of looks like it just hooks over the frame? I have one of those little Beclawat plates riveted to the inside of mine in the center which I hate to remove.

It is a flattened J hook at the top. I saw one photo with the Beclawat logo and the J hook went over it.
The short end of the J has to be short enough to clear the rivets in the headers.

John, how did you manage to remove the screws at the lower windshield frame to install the lower tensioner rod bracket? I suspect you’re going to tell me you unbolted the windshield, and raised it up and tilted it forward some. |

I did remove the windshield. The screws into the bottom frame had pulled partially out so I had to get access to repair the threads.

Kevin, I’ve got a bunch of screwdrivers like that and small ratcheting ones but I couldn’t get any of them even close to working on the two screws into the frame. I ordered a set of the below tools today from Amazon and if they don’t fit in there then I may punt as I don’t know if I want to pull the windshield.

I can tighten the vertical screws with a screwdriver like that, but the ones into the frame are not possible on the car.

Hmmm. I can get to all 4 screws with the screwdriver pictured. I just went and snugged them down to refresh my memory on how tight it is. For the screws in the frame, the screwdriver gets a little off center when passing over the lower screws but not enough to strip the screw heads. I just have to make sure I’m not over one of the lower screws for the final tightening.

Some of us may have our windshields set slightly more raked. I set mine with an angle finder, I think I remember from ERAs specs in the manual. Not sure if I’m correct about that after 10 years however. I may have got the angle from somewhere else. I know it was somewhat critical for fitting the top and side curtains so maybe from ERAs instructions for that work.

Dang, even with the extreme offset screwdrivers I bought I can’t get a good enough bite on those screws without risking a slip and scratch getting them out. I measured my windshield angle and it’s 42 deg off horizontal which is the lower end of what is usually seems to be used (42-45 deg). I may try making a bracket that secures to the center bracket screws that go into the cowl instead. It may be a little clunkier but at least I wouldn’t have to disturb the screws into the windshield frame.

ERA set my windshield angle, as they fitted the top.
My windshield frame had much of the threads pulled out. It was easier to fix that off the car.
