Windshield glass replacement
Peter sent me a lovely replacement glass for my windshield on ERA 3014 so I can repair a stone chip.
The instructions in the ERA manual only address the preassembled frame+glass assembly. Any tips on replacing the glass? Without having taken anything apart yet, I'm guessing: 1. Strip all accessories (visors, wind wings, mirrors) from frame 2. Unscrew center bracket from body 3. Unbolt windshield frame from chassis under cowl and withdraw frame+glass assembly entirely from car 4. Remove screws holding the frame sides to the frame edge segments 5. Remove edge segments and rubber strips from old glass 6. Trim new rubber strips to the length of each side of new glass, pointing the ends at 45 degrees to correspond with edge segments 7. Wrap rubber strips around the edge of each side of glass and engage with corresponding edge segment 8. Screw sides back onto framed windshield, being careful not to overpenetrate and crack glass 9. Reinstall finished frame+glass assembly in car (bolt in and reattach center bracket) 10. Reattach accessories Sound about right? Would love to know if any other materials/procedures are needed. I don't think any sealant/goo is involved. I did notice a YT video where dish soap was recommended as lube for getting the edge segments on. Bill |

That's the same video where I saw about the dish soap. The rubber in the video (a channel section) is different from that supplied with my windshield (a flat piece one folds around the edge of the window), but I think I can adapt the procedure. Also, the video just shows the framed windshield, not the side posts it's attached to. Is it possible to remove the framed windshield while leaving the side posts in the car? Or should the posts be unbolted from the chassis and the whole assembly removed before taking everything apart? Bill |
I'd remove the entire frame, including the side plates. Just keep a record of the shims.
