Removing Headlight Trim Rings

Bob, I realize this is a simple problem but I do not want to damage any chrome or paint. I need to remove the headlight trim rings to adjust the headlight aim. I have removed the screw at the bottom of the rings but they are proving difficult to pry off. I have used the paint can lid removers because they have a curved groove that can be hooked in place. Should I pry between the light and trim ring or between the trim ring and body? Any tips?

The guys who actually do the work tell me that you "just" grab the rim on both sides and push (vertically) down as you pull out the bottom.
"It takes strong fingers."
