Again, sidepipes are not inherently deafening. There are some undercar systems that are louder. Use a large glasspack, and you can have good sound control as well as good flow.
It likely varies from make to make, but there isn't much room for an undercar muffler. That being said, some years back, Walker made chambered pipe exhausts, and may still today. Something like that would work. |
If you drive faster than the sound of the side pipes, the noise and gas fumes are left behind. I smelled nothing I heard nothing. After a 1500 mile trip, the noise was NOT even an issue.
Currently in the process of modyfing the exhaust system so it WILL become an issue. TURK |

Since the collectors bolt right onto the headers and nearly all of the Cobra headers I have seen come straight out toward the cutout in the side of the car for the collectors to come through, adding under car pipes to this setup would be difficult to say the least. If you can find some short headers that turn back toward going under the car you maight make it work but it will take some doing. Ron61 |

Here's ERA 003 with undercar exhaust. I redid the entiresystem from headers to tips. I also went without mufflers so it's plenty loud.
However, it's not loud enough. I'm going to install sidepipes soon, no mufflers in them either.........:D (I want my neighbors to REALLY hate me!) |

Anyone interested in a complete undercar exhaust system for an ERA let me know. Sanderson headers, Jet-Hot coated with aluminized pipe and crome tips, ready to bolt right up. |
I have a car with undercar exhaust that exists in front of the rear wheels. I think this is the best of both worlds as you get (1) 'big' sound, but not at all punishing to you and your neighbors, (2) the aesthetics are very pleasing as they show off the car's shape better...nothing gets in the way of the lines of the car, (3) you don't burn any part of your leg exiting or entering the car (this is an important safety issue if you have kids anywhere near the car), and (4) for resale, it actually gives the buyer the option to keep the undercar exhaust...no holes are put in the body of the car.

I have done a bunch of research, have pic's of original 427 (428) cars, etc. I am starting to build the engine and will probably be ordering my car in a year or so from ERA. I just might have found the only downside to undercar exhaust: I can hear the 'normal' buzzing of my ignition controler under the dash when I am at a stop light. Not a serious problem, but it is annoying.

My car came with undercar exhaust. Me and my wife went on a picknick in the car and I took along a gun with several hundred rounds of ammo. I was going to do some target practice out in the Dessert near Palm Springs. About half way there my wife smelled something burning. I thought it was just some of the Chemical plants along the way. A few miles later I decided I better take a look in the trunk since the smell was getting pretty strong. My thought was what could be burning in the trunk. Well when I opened the trunk I noticed the blanket we had brought along with the ammo sitting on top of it was smoldering. I yanked out the paper bag with the ammo and then pulled out the blanket and it burst into flames. What happened is that the undercar exhaust had shifted and burned through the fiberglass cover in the trunk. The original cars have a couple of fiberglass covers that make room for the undercar exhaust. So if you go with the under car exhaust just make sure it stays where it is supposed to be.
I put some aluminum and insulation behind the hole burned into the fiberglass and not long after that I went to the side exhaust. I found the side exhaust definately improved performance from my PI 428 that was originally in the car. Although it is noisier I find the buffeting of the wind and the heat to be more of a factor on long drives than the noise. I also find it tougher to take the car for long drives now that I am 30 years older. Have fun, Ray |
