Radiator Fan

Bob,
My radiator fan currently mounts thru the radiator fins with some plastic fasteners. I have developed a leak in the radiator around one of these fasteners and wanted to see if you have another way of mounting. Is your optional fan bigger and does it mount to the radiator frame?

Thanks,
DC

Bob Putnam 07-25-2002 05:48 AM

Dave,

While we didn't have many problems like you had with the pin-type mounting, it wasn't too long after your car that we changed to an external mounting system for both our standard and optional fans.

Unfortunately, even the standard fan was changed with the new mounting system, so you'll have to update the fan too. The new standard fan is about 20% more powerful than your current one.

If you have lots of spare cash  , you might consider updating to the aluminum radiator and new shrouding at the same time. Give Bryan or Peter a call for the $ details.

Thanks Bob,
I'll call today. My car doesn't like this Ga heat so I'll probably upgrade depending on how long it takes to get it and $$$. I already have a call in to Peter about some other upgrades.

Oh yeah,
How do you get these d*** pins loose? (they do not screw off)

Jim Holden 07-25-2002 08:30 PM

Dave:

The only way I know is to cut them off...

Jim,
I figured that is what I would have to do. Do you have the aluminum radiator that Bob mentioned above?

DC

ps. How do you decide what ERA to drive? I would love to see your garage!

Bob Putnam 07-26-2002 05:35 AM

Since he got his Class 2 license, the only two-seater that I've seen Jim drive has a sleeper cab and a 40 foot trailer.

John 550 07-26-2002 01:55 PM

I upgraded my "standered " fan to the larger 16" fan , I would highly recomened it .

M. Farcus 07-26-2002 04:56 PM

Had the same problem on my SC car....converted to the new style fan mount, no more problems.
On the FIA car w/ aluminum radiator I don't run a fan....just drive real fast (road race only). Morty has to have to have two fans on his cars, I think its also a requirement for his Class 2 license.
Never figured out why he even needed water in the radiator, just adds weight when pushing the cars in and out of the trailer. The aluminum radiator makes sense though.

Murt...

Having recently spoken with a leading aerodynamicist from an un-named but local aerospace conglomerate, I pass along this bit of advice. "The use of a large 'puller' style fan on a low powered car with poor aero packaging (like yours) will be beneficial in the upper speed ranges due to its ability to remove the stalled air wave in front of the radiator. The effectivness is determined by the total power available. Larger, more powerfull versions of the same vehicle will have diminished returns."

Kind of like putting a propeller on the front of your little toy car.

BTW: Whats up with the Team F logos? I have to do something soon as the paint is falling off the trailer rapidly.

Jim Holden 07-26-2002 07:30 PM

Cheeks:

The ERA Motorsport logos are available from the Jakester. If you want a setup like the Roadamiester has, why let me know and I'll get back to you with a quote (or two).

The Jakester also has the smaller "windshield" logos as well "in stock." They are approx. 23" long by 3" high. All yours for $15.00 plus $4.50 for a mailing tube and shipping. If you (and anyone else out there) would like the one, drop me a note with your check for $19.50. Mail to:

James Holden, 124 Court Street, White Plains, NY. 10601

PS: Actually I had considered running the car without anything in the block... for awhile there it kept leaking out the back of the block.

PPS. Dave: I'm a seriel ERA repeat offender. Lord knows why, but I keep going back for more...

Dave Crace 09-05-2002 05:38 AM

Bob,
I ordered the aluminum radiator and the upgrade fan a couple of weeks ago and have not seen them yet. Can you check with Peter and see if they went out? It's still hotter than blue blazes down here in GA.

Thanks
DC

Dave:

I have found that if you intend to harass Peter P., ya don't harass Bob. Ya have to do it the old fashioned way; place a call to 860-224-0253... he does check his voice mail and there is nothing, I have found, like the personal touch of leaving a semi obscene message to get a response.

...and yes I have the new radiator and extra$ fan. But, it never goes on cause I never run the car that long. I can get the Scutt Farcus Special on and off the trailer before the fan even thinks about kicking on.

Jim / Mort:
No harassment intended towards Bob. He has always been helpful on anything I have asked. It took numerous calls to get the radiator and fan ordered. Trying to time when Peter is not out to lunch is a chore in itself. Just trying to save another long distance phone call. Haven't tried the obscene voice mail yet. I should get some tips from Turk.

I bet if you were here in georgia, your fan would come on before you got it off the trailer.

Bob Putnam 09-06-2002 05:33 AM

Dave,

Peter was in and (mostly) out yesterday, so I left a note on his desk. Bryan didn't know anything about it, so it's Peter's fault. **)
