'chirping' noise coming from rear
Hi,
Just took delivery of my brand spanking new turnkey era 427. Great car. I just wish I got this thing when I was single! Couple of quick questions. I have noticed a 'chirping' noise coming from the rear which seems in synch with the tire rotation. It sound like a bird chirping (tweek tweek). Doesn't start right away, and seems to disappear when going at higher speed. It's not caused by any stick or other object being stuck. Is there any cause for alarm? Should I just drive the car and keep track of its coming and goings? Second: does the car have enough clearance for a license plate holder - like the one that says Carroll Shelby Motors - between the trunck light and the trunk latch? Thanks |

Drive it for a bit and keep track of the chirp. Hopefully it's just a high spot on the rotor. This is what happens with an undercar exhaust. You can actually hear stuff! :MECOOL: Yes, the Carroll Shelby Motors license plate bracket fits. I'm surprised that Peter didn't sell you one. :rolleyes: |

As a former ERA owner- sadly, perhaps I can offer a suggestion? The next time you hear this noise try pulling up the emergency brake lever a couple of clicks. If the noise goes away it is the emergency brake pads lightly touching the rotor. If it doesn't, it isn't.:) Congratulations on your car! |
If it ain't the brakes squeaking, then it could be the pinion shaft seal is not lubed and is making the squealing noise, I have seen / heard that one before.

Thanks to all who answered my question.....the chirping noise seems to have disappeared. No idea what it was.

ERA535 is probably right...mine has an intermittant chirping from the E-brake pads; pull up and release the handle, to "center" the e-brake calipers and it usually goes away...for a while...also seems to get better after the brakes heat up.
