Need more carb linkage travel

Bob, I have the standard gas pedal to carb linkage (I believe) in the 427 SC. I recently discovered that I was not achieving WOT in the primaries when the gas pedal was fully depressed. Only about 45 degress in the primaries which means the secondaries were not even opening. The carb is a Holley 650 DP (4777).

When I disconnected the gas pedal linkage at the carb and operated the carb lever completely the primaries open fully and the secondaries open at 45 degress of primary and are fully open when the carb lever is fully back. I believe this is normal operation for the carb.

I need more gas pedal linkage travel at the carb. Presently I get approximately 1.75" of travel but need about 2.5" of travel. I have both linkage arms adjusted as short as possible. The linkage arm from the carb to the cross shaft is 7.5" and the second arm (from cross shaft to pedal lever) is 5.75".

What can I do to increase the linkage travel at the carb? I believe I can drill a hole closer to the trottle shaft in the carb lever to provide more shaft rotation with the same linkage travel. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

I just got through foolin' with my carb, and noticed that there are 3 holes in the crossshaft arm on the pedal side, and either 2 or 3 holes in the crossshaft arm on the carb side. You will get max travel using the hole closest to the shaft on the pedal side, and the hole furthest from the shaft on the carb side. You also want to shorten the pedal link until you get enough pedal travel to open the carb all the way, but don't leave very much air under the pedal at WOT, or you may bend something when you get a little too "enthusiastic". Did I cut my pedal link? I don't remember, but I might have. I have a std Holley, no probs with WOT. I have the carb link bolted to the carb arm through a 1/4" factory hole in the arm.

Many times the point of connection to the carb is the problem. Take a look at these instructions and pictures for hints. We've always been able to make the stock linkage work.

Bob, I followed your procedure to adjust the linkage and everything works as designed. The builder / PO went out of their way to install "step-down washers" in the larger hole on the carb throttle lever and attached the linkage at this point. This did not allow the travel needed. I relocated the linkage end to 1/4 hole closer to the throttle shaft to gain the necesssary travel.
