shift lever modification

1 Attachment(s)
I have modified an older Mustang shift lever as indicated in the ERA manual. Now I need to cut off the current Hurst lever on the shifter I am using (from a 66 Fairlane). The shifter lever I am using is fairly common and I was wondering if anyone else has had experience or advice on how and where to cut off the old lever?? I will try to attach a photo of what it looks like.

We cut off the Hurst lever below the "Z" bend and weld on an adapter plate. I'll post some pictures on our site at http://www.erareplicas.com/427man/shift/index.htm sometime this morning.

Thanks Bob

Thanks for the help Bob. I was thinking slightly higher, but will adjust a bit lower now.

FYI Bob,

There is also a ready made set-up. It simply requires the Hurst style shifter which uses two bolts to hold the handle on. An adapter is made to bolt on in place of the handle and has two sets of holes in the top to bolt a stock Ford shifter handle onto. The two sets of holes are to get the angle toward the driver.

R&B, just so you know, the correct shifter is from a Galaxie of that vintage. I believe a Fairlane version is like the Mustang in being shorter.

If you like, take a look in my gallery at the picture that says "Details."

Shifter

Al,
Thanks for the info. I really did not know if the shifter was originally designed for the Fairlane. The fact that there was a 428 and not a 390 under the hood indicated that the guy before me might have changed a few things.

R&B.

Probably not the shifter though. The longer Galaxie handle would hit the seat in a Fairlane.
