clutch adjustment

Hello Bob
I tried to adjust the clutch on a friends ERA (490something) Large in/out , top load, 428 , not sure of clutch type but it's pinkish red , 6k miles on car. It seems that it slowly went out of adjustment and became unusable . After my adjustment , the pedal must still go to the floor. I would like to see it up a bit . The fluid is dirty , it was suggested this could be the problem (viscosity) . I thoutht I made the correct adjustments on linkage . I would like to see more travel . I read in your manual that there are times when a different slave may need to be used ? I still want to try the master linkage adjustment again and change the fluid , but wondered about the set up ? . Thanks :)

John,

Bleed the clutch with the back of the car significantly higher than the front.

If there is a return spring on the throwout lever, remove it.

Without pressure on the clutch pedal, adjust the threaded link between the slave and the throwout arm so that you can push the link into the slave about 1/4" (with the throwout arm gently pushed toward the back).

You should get 5/8"-3/4" throw at the throwout arm when you push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

If the clutch doesn't fully disengage, you may have to raise the clutch pedal by lengthening the link between the master cylinder and the cross-shaft arm. If you can't get adequate movement then, a larger master cylinder may be needed, but we find that they rarely needed on a big block.

Need help

John,
Is Joe still having a problem? He spoke to Charlie this weekend and it sounds like a master or slave cylinder problem due to dirty fluid. If you a working on it again and need help let me know, I set up both my ERA's and they worked fine.

Joe
