Shortened Jag half shafts.....
Bob,
Will the custom shortened half shafts that ERA uses fit on an EM car? I currently have a Jag XKE rear in the car. I want to get the rear tires (15" BFG 295's) under the body a bit more to get the correct stance. Compomotive pin drives are mounted now and I'm not so sure that I can change the backspacing enough to accomplish this. If the half shafts will work without any interference, can I buy them from you folks? Thanks.....Mel |
Mel,
Sorry, but we're stretched too thin to do outside work now and in the foreseeable future. Concours West may be able to help, although I think they've dropped building complete rears. |
Hi Mel,
I am puzzled. %/ If you have an XKE rear (complete) you already have the narrowest unit available. If you want to make it narrower, you'll need both halfshafts and wishbones that are shorter. Am I as usual totally off the mark? Regards, Tom |
There are two different XKE widths, one for the Series 1 and 2, and a wider one for the Series 3(the E Type with the small flares).
For reference, the cross center-to-center of the shorter half-shaft is ... (pulling up the Cad file...) It's gotta be around here somewhere... 11.78" :3DSMILE: |
But But Bob,
Don'tcha need to match the halfshaft length to the wishbone length? If Mel's already got matching halfshafts and wishbones, mustn't he replace both to get the thing narrowed? Or am I missing something obvious here? :o Regards, Tom |
Tom,
You are correct! :D :D The control arm length must be appropriate to the half-shaft. I posted the length so that Mel could compare it with what he had. I should'a'bin more specific. **) |
Bob
Thanks for your input and the dimension, I'll have to check it out. I can appreciate that you guys are really busy......oh well, back to my original plan. Tom Guess I'll have to try the method you posted for me in checking interference/body contact regarding wheel backspacing. Probably a lot less work than changing out half shafts anyway. Geeez......what we will do just to get the details right!!! Thanks guys.......Mel |
ha.. you all thought I was nuts..
Thanks Bob..
I just went through this with my wheels.. I know my rear module came from an e-type but the Trigo's I got didn't fit.. Buyer beware Trigo won't take wheels back once you mount tires even if THEY convince you they will fit.. What the hey.. $3400 with tires, taxes and shipping.. At least I could use the hubs.. I ended up with PS Engineering 9.5 and 11 x17's.. Tell Phil you are having the same problem I did.. He's a good guy to deal with. Regards, |
