SW Fuel gauge Help!
Bob.
My SW fuel gauge is not registering any fuel in the tank. The needle moves when turned on, from 1/4 to empty. I have removed the back trunk panel to access the sending unit, but can't seem to get to it to find out if the unit is ok or it is the gauge. Any help would be appriciated. I know this may follow the earlyer thread about Smith gauges VS other brands, and if that is the case about replacing the guages, why use them in the first place? Just a question from a new owner. I can't answer your question, but do you have Stewart Warner gauges or Smith's? By the way, you got a great car at a great price. Good luck (and stay close to a gas station until you get the gauge sorted out:3DSMILE: ) |

I have Stewart Warner Gauges, not Smith, I just had been reading about all the problems with the Smith gauges and was confused. Thanks for the compliment about the Car, so far it runs great. I hope to take a 60 mile trip this weekend if the sun comes out and the temp stay nice. A week end off and a trip to the NJ shore. Just the start of may, I hope. Corky |

Reading zero on the gage indicates an open circuit. Remove the access plate and unplug the connector. Ground the white wire that connects to the main harness. (Be carefull - the pink wire from the main harness is hot.) With the ignition switch on, the gage should go to full. If the gage is uneffected, check the plug at the driver's side of the dash, where the dash harness connects to the rear harness. The other possibilities are a incorrect connection at the gage, or a bad gage. If the gage goes to full, try connecting the pink wire from the tank to the white wire of the harness. Maybe soneone used the wrong wire to connect to the sender. If you still have the pin extractor tool, you can reverse the plug wires, avoiding %/ removing the tank... |
