More Exhaust Questions

What is the size of the FIA side pipes ? Also what is the size of the muffler inlet/outlet and type of muffler used ( glasspack ) ? I'm asking because the 427 people are saying that some exhaust is costing them 50 + hp. How much space is there for a custom exhaust ? Thanks Bob

This system uses a glasspack with 2" ID. There may be glasspacks that are available with 2.25" or even 2.5" ID with an increase in noise.

Thanks Bob, just the info I needed.

Bob-
Here's a stupid question, but how do you go about changing the muffler in the side pipe? I'm worried that my pipes may be too loud (if that's possible) when I get them.

Thanks,
Mike

Chaplin,

Generally you don't change the muffler, you change the whole pipe.

I'm worried mine will be too quiet :D

Chaplin 04-10-2003 07:30 AM

Thanks Bob- That's what I figured.

Traveller- I don't think you should be too concerned:D

Hey Bob, one more question. How much space is there on a FIA for aftermarket exhaust ? It seems as if all the glasspack type mufflers with larger inside diameters are 4" outside diameter instead of the 3.5" that comes with the kit. Is this going to cause a problem with clearance between the exhaust and body ? Thanks

Hello ?

FR,

Because of the position of the FIA exhaust (they moved the 427's for a reason), when you go larger, you lose critical ground clearance. It's not unheard of for the FIA race cars (lowered a bit) have their exhaust tips hit the ground once in a while. The exhaust is already as tight to the body as we dare.

Okie dokie Bob. See originally I was leaning toward the 427 but lately the FIA has caught my eye. I also want LOUD. Maybe I can find someone that can make a muffler that will fit in the space allowed. Thanks Bob.

This place will make a muffler that fits your pipes. Did mine here. 26" racing muffler, 3" collector. They are a custom fabricator, so you can have most any size you want: JBA Racing

I am real pleased with how mine turned out. Was debating how large to open them up--was concerned about noise. 3" was just right. Louder than blazes when on it. Passable at idle.
