Exhaust Hanger Problems

Bob,
The rubber strap that supports the sidepipe tore (from the bolt hole to the edge on the top of the rubber strip) on one side, and I am afraid that if we replace it with a similar part it will do the same thing. I did notice that the pipes weren't exactly lined up with the brackets when we installed the hangers. It took a little bit of coaxing to get them together, but we did everything as the directions stated. I was thinking that a heavy nylon strap, folded over to make a loop and sewn together on both ends, would serve the same purpose as the rubber strap, without the chance of it tearing. Do you think that it would handle the heat of the pipes?

Ike,

We've been doubling up the hangers (two per side) and it seems to work OK.

The nylon probably wouldn't stand up to the heat. How about Kevlar? ;)

Try going to your local "big truck" dealer. Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner. They all use very heavy duty rubberized exhaust stack hangers. Much more wieght capable and very flexible. It might take a few minutes with a creative parts person but I bet they will find you something that will work.
I have used all kinds of big truck parts on my Lone Star kit. Oil cooler, sidepipe mounts, oil lines, etc.

Bob, I am not sure how easy it is going to be to put hangers on both sides. It seems as if the brackets on the pipes are not mounted in the same spot. I know on one side, the bracket on the pipe was so far forward that I had to mount the hanger on the back of the pipe bracket and on the front of the chassis mount. It was still a stretch to do it this way, so I am not sure if I could get two straps to go from front to front, and back to back. Have other people had issues with this?

I hate to say this , But I have not had a issue at all in 9000 miles .
I have no alignment issues though .

Ike,

Can you use a longer bolt through the bracket on the chassis? Try this sequence:

1. Bolt through chassis
2. Small flat washer
3. Nut
4. Another nut if needed
5. Large flat washer
6. Hanger strap
7. Large flat washer
8. Lock nut

That will offset the top mount of the hanger by around 1/2".

I will give this a try. Do you think the tear came from the fact that there was too much tension on the hanger?

Also, can we get this type of material locally? It didn't look like any type stock I have seen before.
