Parts Found in Oil Filter - What are they?

Hi Bob,

Check out this thread: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...threadid=41203 I think the parts are probably the pressure bypass spring and ball from the oil pump. I don't think it's from the oil cooler adapter because I don't think the ones you supply with your kits have a spring and ball. By the way, after more closely inspecting my drain pan, I found a small concave disk. Apparently the disk that was supposed to hold the spring and ball bearing in place. In any case, can you confirm whether or not the remote oil cooler adapter you supply has any kind of check valve in it? **)

Chris,

The oil cooler sandwich adapter does have a bypass with a (roughly) 5/16" ball, 1/2" long spring, and 1/2" diameter domed retainer. The bypass works as a crude thermostat, bypassing the cooler when there's too much pressure drop through it.

Thanks Bob. Sounds like that's where my parts came from. I'll give Peter a call about having it replaced.

Have your oul analyzed! You may have more problems, if not it is cheap insurance.

Check your lifters and cam too. My old 428 had debris in the oil and filter and it turned out to be catastophic. Three flat lobes on my cam with the bottom worn out of several hydraulic lifters. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there needs to be a complete examination of your engine. Keith Williams in Dallas had a similar problem with his 428. Don't take anything for granted.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Same thing happened when I changed the oil on my car a couple of weeks ago. Nothing like the sound of metal pieces falling into the oil catch pan to get your attention! ERA sent a replacement "sandwich plate", but I may just leave the cooler out of the loop as the oil never got all that warm anyway. It was such a pain in the butt taking out the offending part, removing the oil lines, etc., it's not something I want to do again. All that holds the disc in place is apparently a miniscule amount of aluminum where two edges of the cavity it sits in were "peened over" with a very small punch. Doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence. Good luck.

Tommy,

Before I installed my new one, I added a few more "peens" to try and keep it from happening again. If it does happen again, I'll toss the Earls sandwich plate in the trash and replace it with something else.

Chris
