SPAX Shocks - Duty Life - When to Change?
My ERA, #375 has the "standard" ERA suspension both front and rear. The original suspension sports the SPAX gas shocks, one on each side in front and two on each side in the rear. The SPAX are on settings ("Klicks") 5 in front and 6 in the rear.
Seeing that these shocks are 11 years old (9,000 miles) now, just how long a life span or duty cycle can I expect from them? There is no evidence of ride or performance degredation nor are their any leaks, etc. In fact, they look just about new due to meticulous detailing, etc. From a mileage age standpoint, the shocks are new. The car lives on jackstands for the four winter months of the year (now). Is there a rule of thumb guideline for shock replacement? Again, the ride quality appears perfect, especially after having my front rims and tires dynamically balanced on a new HUNTER GSP9700 computer balancing machine (this is one remarkable device) www.gsp9700.com It is a complex device so it is only as good as the operator. Also, Hunter has optional pin drive thrust wheels for this machine. If you have pin drive rims, make sure you find a place that has them. Merry Xmas and Whatever... (PC) |
Like the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" :)
We've had pretty good luck with the Spax. Almost all failures have been as a result of the shaft seal going bad. When you lay the car up, spray some rubber lube or silicone onto the shaft so that flows onto the top of the shock. As the shock wears, you can always adjust the damping screw to compensate. |
Sound Great Bob, Thanks for the tip on the lube.
Happy Holidays to you Amigo. |
