Subaru steering rack

I am trying to track down some parts for a pending 289FIA purchase.

I know that ERA offers modified Mustang steering rack because the Subaru racks are getting to be pretty hard to find. I kind of like the idea of the 2.7 turns lock to lock and I don't give up too easy, so I am looking for a Subaru rack.

I am told that there was not significant mechanical changes from the '79 Brat rack to the '80 and that it is breather tube related for the boots. Internally vented vs. external. To his point '79 has been impossible to find but I have come accross a few 1980's.

If that is true, have I just found my needle-in-the-haystack?

Any input or light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.

We've also got some fast-ratio (2.8 turns l/l) in stock.

As far as the Subaru rack, measure the center-to-center distance of the mounting bushings. You want 8.0" +/- .1".

The Subaru rack and pinion is available in a rebuilt unit from the bigger auto parts stores.

Look for a Cardone 24-2608.

I got mine at Discount Auto Parts online.
Plug in a 1978 Subaru 1600 2bbl in the search engine.

3 day delivery for mine.

How different are low speed maneuverability and high speed stability between the Subaru rack and the modified Mustang unit?

For the street driver, do you have a preference?

Thought I read somewhere it was in the planning stages, but did ERA ever get a chance to test electro-mechanical variable assisted steering systems?

If you do a lot of city driving or parking, have a spouse with limited upper body strength, or have gotten really soft, the slower ratio would be best. For real men :cool: , the faster ratio is quite acceptable. We used the faster ratio for many years without significant complaints.

I've done some research on them, but mostly for our GT which has the steering wheel at arms length and uses a faster steering ratio. The 427 has never cried out for such a complicated fix, especially with the slower ratio gear which feels very close to power. KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) is a good basis for kit design...
