Headlight Low Beam Problem

Bob,

My low beam headlights have started acting up. They essentially cycle on and off. About 1 minute on followed by 1 minute off (although it sometimes is as short as 15 seconds or as long as 3 minutes). The highbeams and parking lights all work fine. The problem is very consistent and it doesn't matter whether the car is running or off. Since the problem is so consistent and doesn't seem to be the result of a vibration, I assume it's not a bad connection. Seems like it's likely a bad dimmer relay. Does that sound like the likely culprit to you or is there something that I might be overlooking?

Chris,

Now that's a unique behavior!

To isolate the problem, join one of the red wires and the blue wire that connect to the headlight relay with a jumper. That will give you "permanent" low beams. If the intermittant problem disappears, the relay is bad.

Chris,

I don't know how hard it may be to get to your relay, but you can change it or use the above method. Also make sure that you don't have a ground or loss of power to the relay coil because of a bad connection. Last of all and most hopefully not the problem could be in the dimmer switch itself. I had that happen in one of my regular cars and the dimmer switch was causing it.

Relay

Chris,
I had the exact same problem. I found the relay to be bad. It is under the dash to the right of the steering column. It is just attached to a metal plate and easy to remove without any tools. To find it just click the headlight switch and you will hear the relay. What I did to repair is removed the relay and removed the wiring to the relay and reattached the wiring. Reinstalled and their has been no other problems.
Hope that works,
Regards
Mike

I replaced the relay last night. Problem solved. Thanks to everyone that responded.
