Wheel spec's for 289 FIA Wheels?
What are the critical dimensions of the wheels for specification with a vendor? I really, really like the look of the wire wheels but want the same meat on the street as the FIA wheels and I'd like Dayton Wire Wheels to quote it for me.
How much backspacing? Any other critical dimensions to match the depth and width of the FIA wheels? Any precautions I should be aware of before launching into wire wheels? I wouldn't race on them, but they sure looks sweet! Saw them on a slabside at the Wine Country Classic, and they look fabulous! DD |
The Pin-drive and bolt-on wheel specs are here but my recollection is that the Daytons are only available in 7" and 8" in the appropriate offsets. I've got the specs at work - I'll post them tomorrow (Tuesday).
The Dayton wheels are very stout (designed for 4000 lb cars) and I wouldn't worry about their strength. Wire wheel page added today. :JEKYLHYDE Dayton Wheels |

To match the spec's of the FIA wheels onto the Dayton, I've done the following markups to your Dayton wheel drawings: Front: overall width: from 8.00" to 8.30" inside width: from 7.00" to 7.50" backspacing: unchanged backspacing to centerline: 0.12" to 0.27 Designed for 235/60-15 Rear: overall width: from 9.00" to 10.40" inside width: from 8.00" to 9.50" backspacing: from 3.00" to 3.88" backspacing to centerline: 1.50" to 1.33" Designed for 295/50-15 Would you mind running a second pair of eyes over this and let me know if I've overlooked something? Am I changing these specifications correctly? Is there any particular reason why the FIA wheel dimensions were not duplicated for the wire wheels that had been spec'd before? |
FIA wheels were actually 6.5 & 8.5 some folks have fudged in quest for a larger footprint.

Those drawings were the ones that I sent to Dayton for the last set of wheels done. They fit the car perfectly, limited by the available wheel widths of that particular model Dayton wheel. See the print. If you want a different model, I just need to know how wide so that I can adjust the backspacing. The first set of wire wheels (Dunlop) we did were only 7" wide and needed spacers to work. |
I'll take a look at the Dayton catalog. They indicated that they could work with any wheel width (within reason, I would assume), but I'll check to make sure.
Other than the Dayton constraints on wheel width, am I spec'ing these wheels correctly? DD |
I figure out the backspacing by modeling the tire cross-section on the wheel, so the offset will vary with the wheel width. The object is to place the edge of the tire in the correct position relative to the fender opening. Since my (official) tolerance is +/- 1/8", your constraints are too large for me.
I haven't done the process for every width, so please just give me the wheel and tire width. |
