Motor mounts question

On the drivers side, where the headers exit the body, there is evidence that the top of the header has been touching/rubbing the fiberglass edge above it.

Obviously, under acceleration the engine is torqueing over and lifting the header against the body.

Any suggestions to stop this? Looks like the motor mount is normal rubber biscuit material and does not appear to be broken.

PARKERPOWER 04-14-2008 07:57 PM

John what I have seen done is a piece of chain attached to the block and then to the frame to keep the mount from traveling too far when it revs, but the chain is slack when normal running.

jdean 04-14-2008 08:05 PM

That would sure do the trick. I know I have seen that on drag cars too.

Kramer 04-14-2008 09:25 PM

My car is not operational yet, but I have heard of the torque causing this issue. (I have had other issues during the build with the pipes hitting the body as well)

There are two things I would consider before a chain.

1) Change out your motor mount with one of the ERA versions with the extra bolt in it. Call ERA, they will get this to you.

2) While my car is just about finished, I took another step and fabricated some thick metal squares to put inside the motor mount perches. These metal squares are a pefert fit to the inside of the perch and should keep things from moving around too much.

So Kramer, are you saying you will use solid metal for motor mounts?
Thanks for the info on the other mount from ERA, I will call them.

Kramer 04-14-2008 10:13 PM

No...I use the motor mounts ERA sent me. They had the extra bolt in as shown here:

http://www.erareplicas.com/427man/en...tmod/index.htm

When I dropped the motor in, the motor mount bolts slide into the perches on either side. Once the engine was in the car and level, I fabricated a square metal piece (with a hole for the motor mount bolt) and place in on the inside of the perch itself to keep things from moving around a bit. I think it will work, but again, my car is not on the road yet.

Make sense?

Kramer,
Those don't look like FE motor mounts in the ERA link, what are they?

PARKERPOWER 04-15-2008 06:48 AM

John what you might do first is buy a new stock mount first and try it as the old mount may have had oil or something on it that caused it to soften up. if you still have the same problem then you could always add the chain or drill that new mount and put the bolt through it like era did.

Clois Harlan 04-15-2008 07:32 AM

John,

Just drill a 3/8" hole thru the rubber and metal part of your motor mount on the drivers side. Then insert a nice 3/8" bolt - grade 5 and use a 1" washer on both sides with a locking washer followed by the nut and you will solve the problem for under $5.

You might want to do a search on this topic. There was an extensive discussion concerning motor mounts several months ago.

As an aside, I have used ERA's "bolt through" motor mounts on both my ERA427SCs and my ERAFIA (this due to the Weber air horns hitting the hood when the motor torqued over.

I'm running solid mounts from Rodney.. They are awsome!!! Get Rodney by email at 'rodscobra@shaw.ca'

I'm running a 427 Stroker and love the mounts!!

John, come look!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I have done the bolt mod myself on both sides. You don't need to get them from ERA if you have good mounts. And I'll show you the shims and tell you how I installed them.

Here's Kramer's thread on this issue. See the last page for my solution:

You're one us now and you have local ERA experience to benefit from :D You HAVE downloaded the manual haven't you?

Well, I lifted the car and checked it out from underneath. Turns out when I push the drivers side headers up, moving the engine a bit, I could see where the existing mount rubber is starting to seperate at the top.

With the car just sitting there, you cannot detect the cracking since the rubber is compressed vs. trying to open up.

This is the culprit, so I ordered a new mount from ERA with the bolt-thru mod.

Thanks to all the ERA fans/owners who chimed in to help the latest ERA-head.

BTW.....can the mounts be changed out by raising the engine a bit and without removing the headers?

Yes. Just remember to loosen your trans mount bolts a little bit too.

ERA649 04-16-2008 03:26 PM

I solved this problem by putting 1/4 washer between the motor mount and the frame on the right hand side.

jdean 04-16-2008 06:30 PM

Sammy,

I got a manual with the car....have not read it yet....too thick!!

John
