Carpet on Tunnel

I'm having a little trouble getting the carpet to lay smooth on the tunnel, particularly on right side. I get a kink up near the front. Any tips?

When it comes to applying carpet, Jack has magic fingers. He can probably give you some hints over the phone. He's here early but also leaves at 3:30 pm Eastern time.

I have heard of people using steam to soften and mold carpet to shape. I have never done it myself.

The old Porsche 356s had wool square weave carpet that was hard to work with in areas similar to the cobra's tunnel cover. I always used a steamer when installing new carpet kits and it got rid of the wrinkles/kinks, etc. Just take your time and let the steam/heat do the work for you. I also used a small 3" wooden roller to assist me in pushing the hot carpet into tight spots, corners, and over humps. When the carpet cools it will tighten up, assume the shape of the area you are covering, and viola...no more problems.

I think I will give steam a try. I've left the carpet clamped over the tunnel all week and its somewhat assuming the shape now. I think the rest of the problem may be that the garage just isn't warm enough and its making the carpet stiff. All the bending over and working in tight areas is starting to make me a bit stiff!

You might want to try a hair dryer set on max hot. It may give you just enough heat to 'pursuede' the carpet into position.

There is a hot-rod, show car interior upholstery guy in our area that has done custom
carpet in several Cobras recently. He makes it look very tight and smooth in the corners and around all the humps etc. He says the only way to make it look right is to steam it to make to it stretch/form to the surface. After all there are very few square inches of flat surface in a Cobra cockpit.

How do you apply the steam?

I hate when 'carpet tunnel syndrome' happens... :D

I think that is "covered" under my medical insurance.

My wife has a upright clothes steamer that I used to steam my carpet.
