Wiper troubles.. The wiper motor drive
cable works fine without the wipers on their posts. I dropped the dash to see what was happening.. The cable is getting stopped at the driver side wheelbox when the wipers are on their posts. It looks like I need a better guide for the cable at the driver side wheelbox.

I had some issues when I was setting mine up. I had found that the cable was binding the first time I tried it. I had to go back, loosen everything up and re-align the tubes (did this a few times) until I got it to work smoothly. Perhaps its just the positioning of the tubes that the cable rides in?
Another thing I ran into was an improper spacement of the tube to the wiper motor, so I had to remove the whole thing one more time. m-a |
Wipers Better Wipers than Lucas anyone? Hell Yeah!

I have been searching for a better, less expensive system than the "Lucas" brand and types used on Cobras and other roadsters. I have a "West Coast" Cobra which I'm building and I got VW wipers with the kit. (I think I can hear your reaction as I type this) Well, the parts did not have the necessary sweep angle which would leave the wipe area well to the right of the driver. You'd have to lean over to the center of the car and peer through. Apparently, the idea was to just HAVE wipers for inspection purposes. Too bad they won't actually work. For what I'm spending on this car that simply won't do.
Results !. I talked to the reps from AM Equipment. http://www.amequipment.com/ A quote from Butch Helland [Butch@amequipment.com] "A motor assembly will cost you $152.06. You will need a second pivot shaft, this will cost about $33.00. You will need a link, about $18.00, and some small hardware. Standard sweep angles would be 101-104 and 112-118 degrees. You will also need a double link drive arm, under $10.00 and some spacers to mount the motor to allow clearance for the drive arm. You are pushing the $200 dollar mark and still do not have arms and blades." They even have an attachment which gives you adjustable sweep! Download the catalog PDF file. I'll post photos when I get them mounted to the body if anyone is interested. Xack |
Wipers on a Cobra are pretty much useless. Get some Rain-X. As far as YOUR wipers go, lay everything out & bench test it. It may require some tweeking of the tubes to get them to operate smoothly, but don't expect too much. Remember, this stuff is made by Lucas.

It's been a while, but I had to tweak mine a bit to eliminate binding. No more putzing around with it than I would expect a novice to need to do to get it to work. Seems to work fine now. I do remember doing quite a bit of trimming on the spacers for the posts...
Good luck, Doug |
Yes, I had to trim more off of the spacers than what the manual said as well.
