remove dist gt40

To those much wiser

I need to remove the msd pro billet dist from my 351w.
Will i run into interference trying to lift it out. I'm trying to avoid moving the engine (GT40) I need to remove the dist to clean or replace the mechanical advance. Seems to be a victim of corrosion very stiff to move. 3k miles but 5 years old.

And the answer is...

we (including Ted) are not sure.

If you can't pull the distributor straight up, you might have to disconnect the engine mounts and raise the front of the engine.

thanks Bob. If anyone would know it would be Ted.

I'll let you know, project for tonight

Thanks to the great Bobnak. The youngster who never saw Carson will never get that. lets keep them guessing

piece of cake. the distributor pulled straight up with no issues. Plenty of room. The msd distributor is very small MSD#8578. I can imagine a big ford distributor might have issues. My suspicions were correct the shaft is rusted where the shaft goes through the advance mechanism. The advance requires a fair a mount of preasure to move. I have purchase a new one and have msd rebuild the old one as a spare

thanks

Glad that it came out so easily. I hope that you noted the direction of the rotor as the distributor gear disengaged from the cam gear.

maked the housing as well as the rotor. Timing should not be off that much. I'll put a light on it once its running. You might want to give others a heads up about corrosion inside an msd Distributor.
there is no excuse for this with the anti rust materials avail. I'm going to send back the old one for repair. Curious to see how they charge me for that. I have a new one on order. i'll keep the old one as a backup.

thanks

To anyone who has to pull a disributor with a frozen advance. Mark the rotor on intake manifold in the unadvanced state. Mine was fully advanced when i marked it. of course putting the new unadvanced rotor in the position of advanced rotor causes the engine to run a little ugly. I figure i was one tooth off. Pulled it and moved over one tooth runs like a champ
I really should have thought that one through a little more
