removal of side shaft cover

ZF-2 transaxle. Does anyone have experience in removing the the side cover where the side shaft exits. I'm experiencing 20 thousands play in the shaft. the other side is rock solid no movement. I've getting feedback thats its not a big deal to remove. will the removal of the shaft and the side plate expose enough to diagnos the problem

Thanks LLoyd
