FFR Coupe w/ 5.4 Lightning?
Will a supercharged 5.4 out of a lightning fit w/o modifying the hod on the coupe?
Also, is it possible to get the headers and mounts from FFR for this set up? And Finally, what 5spd bellhousing will bolt up to this motor to use the 95-96 cobra trans? Thanks Ben 99 Ram Air T/A 70 Dodge Super Bee |
They've put 4.6l modulars in FFRs, but they are supposedly very difficult to fit. (need lots of custom work).
5.4 is same block, so I'd say it could probably fit. Problem is engine width, not height. Look around on the web, there is at least one build site for a 4.6 cobra. He should have lots of info for you, that will apply to a 5.4. -Robb |
Ben, MM&FF put a 5.4 lightning motor in an 86' mustang. They had a 4" cowl hood and it still stuck out the top! It's a tall motor!

not sure about the oiling system in a 5.4 but if you worked in a dry sump oiling system, you would be able to drop the motor a couple of inches lower, getting around the height problem and possibly the width.

4.6 vs 5.4 Blocks
The 4.6 and 5.4 liter do not share the same block. I worked on the lightning and cobra powertrains when I worked at Roush. The blocks are not the same. But you are right about the big problem being the width of the engine.

No way, no how would a Lightning 5.4L fit under the hood, unless you took off the supercharger. If you did that, then what's the point?

Not only is it not the same block, and wouldn't even come close to fitting...it wouldn't be that great. Look at the mm&ff car. As the owner of a gen2 L...I can tell you why. They don't like to rev very high....and they produce WAY TOO MUCH Torque!!!!!! There is simply no way to put the power to the ground in such a light car. My 5000lb brick gets squirly when rolling into it at 40mph. The engine is far too heavy as well. You would be far ahead of the game to build an FE. Oh...and I didn't even get into the weak link of the 5.4 with its popcicle stick rods!!!

Doesn't the new Ford GT (40) use a derivative of the Lightning motor? Seems Ford thinks the motor is quite well suited to a performance car so maybe it's not such a bad choice. Yeah you may have to change rods and put in cams that'll work at higher r's but it's only $$ right? I agree with the SIZE thing, the new Ford o'head cam motors are very wide and the Lightning motor is waayyy tall. There's no way it'll fit in a Coupe without half the motor sticking through the hood.

dohc ffr coupe
i have a ffr coupe w/ markiii motor and trans
i do not think the ligthing will fit w/out cuting out the nose but thay siad a dohc would not fit at all maybe the 03 cobra motor |
I'm thinking that FFR is planning or has already engineered their frame to accomodate the 4.6 L engine.... I'm sure it's supposed to be an option in the near future....

Having put a 4.6 in a Cobra I can tell you it is no easy task. :CRY: The 4.6 just clears the hood and the Lighting is taller and wider. Using a dry sump will not fix the low hung trans. %/
