Speedo Problem

Since day one the odometer has been working fine. A short while ago my 140 mph speedometer stopped working until I hit 50 mph. It then reads the speed less 50 mph. Nothing is draging on the inner speedo disk. When I spin the outer (speedometer driven fork-like) component the speedo needle does not move. On the 85 mph unit I have I can spin the outer component by hand and I can easily get it to read up to 30 mph.

Does this assembly work with magnets? What could be the issue?

speed problem i had too big of a gut to pull on the lil speedo! BAH HAHAHA LOL Sorry... I had a friend that had that problem too he thinks it was strickly the brand stewert warner or smith so got something else...on my brothers car with mustang gauges it was doing this same thing noone could figure out what it was so old age was ruled in... never really got to the bottom of it but hope you do...

im thinking at a certain point they have a tendency to do that, like if ur family history shows alot of diabetes or whatever, frustrating stuff!

I believe the technical term is "it's broken" (bet some of you were not expecting that).

Only cure, whether it is a mechanical or an electronic speedo, is to pull it and send it for repair. If the odometer is OK, it is the speedo head at fault, nothing to do with the drive cable.
