4 lug
How many people still use the original 4 lug bolt patern on their cobra's ? my new kit will arrive oct 10 and am putting together a parts list and looking for info, someone talk me into 5 lug please !!

The only real advantage to 5 lug over 4 lug is that you have a wider choice of wheels. That being said, there are some very nice Halibrand replica wheels out there in 4 lug that work nicely.

i have a 4 lug wheels on my ffr--17 in image wheels
halibrand look a like.--look great

Its like Big foot said. The only real difference is the choice of wheels. I have four lug and the halibrand replicas from FF and like the look. If you change to 5 lug you will more choices for wheels, disc, etc.

I believe it's also easier to change to rear disk brakes as well. I designed a rear disk brake bracket that works with cobra calipers. I can share this design with anyone who wants it so they can have a machine shop make their own. (or make several sets for other members as well if you'd like). Just PM me.

5 lug offers a few advantages. Better wheel options is just one. You also get brake options like factory dual piston 13" Cobra brakes, 4 piston aluminum Brembo Cobra R brakes, and aftermaket brakes like SSBC. Rear disc options are better also. 5 lug is also stronger if you are making a lot of power. There are quite a few Mustang guys that have broken lugs on 4 lug setups racing, much less likely if you go 5 lug.

The aluminum Brembos or something like SSBC brakes are far lighter than stock 4 lug junk. |

I guess it is a function of if the brakes are on a Cobra or an old mustang.

Very true. Stock Fox Mustang brakes are going to be more effective on a 2200lb Cobra than a 3200lb Mustang. As for the unsprung weight, that really depends on the brake caliper and rotors. The aluminum Brembos and the like will be much lighter, but you than add mass back with the bigger rotors. Of course you can use a nice 2 piece rotor with an aluminum hat to bring the mass back down. If money wasn't a concern I'd run 5 lug spindles with 2000 Cobra R 4 piston Brembos and 2 piece rotors.
The 94-95 SN95 spindles should also improve steering response over the older Fox spindles, while maintaining the same track width. The later 96 and up spindles will increase track width by 8mm on each side.
I honestly would never build a Cobra an use the 4 lug stuff of the Fox, Im not even using that on my 93 Mustang. |
