How to identify an engine

I got a good deal on a unfinished cobra kit that was purchased back in 1999.
It was originally from Cobra International in Ontario.
When the previous owner picked it up the shop was being closed down by the RCMP so no more information available today.
The original bill says 390 / 402 which one is it?
I need headers for it and I don't want to go wrong with this.

The manifold is WEIAND 7282, is there a number on the motor block itself ?

390/402 just means that it was a 390 engine that has been overbored (part of the machining/rebuilding process) and is now 402ci.

Just buy headers for a Ford FE.

Is it just me or does that picture look like it has headers on it already? Do you mean side pipes?

It dosent really matter which one you got, it's gonna go like H-E-double hockey sticks anyway......my main question is did you get the paperwork so you can license it?

I have all the bills if that is what you mean by paperwork. The car was never registered and does not have a VIN number yet.

That is my next concern after the build...

That should be a major concern NOW,all Cobra mfgr's in the US issue an M.S.O. (manufacturers statement of origin) with there cars so you can go to DMV to get the state to issue a title for your car and of cource those companys are registered with the state as a manufacturer of kit cars NO M.S.O. NO TITLE.

I don't see any pics in your gallery.

My guess would be the listing means 390ci/402hp. The number 402 doesn't really go with a 390 engine at all. A .030 over 390 would be about 396ci. A 390 that's been bored to 402ci wouldn't have any cylinder walls left :).

This was not a factory build. The parts were purchased from different shops in Canada. About 80% comes from Cobra International (now shutdown) some parts from Pigeon performance and I think maybe DD Cobra.

All Canadian parts only.

I found this thread for Ontario registration, has anyone done it this way, they do not talk about MSO...

Maybe Canada is different? Without an MSO in the USA your basically done, game over, it aint gonna happen.

I suppose there are good reasons why the search engine is set up the way it is, but frankly, it's a pain to use.

I didn't need an MSO here in the good ole' USA. It was only required if I bought the car already built from the manufacturer. I didn't buy it that way.

All I had to do was show receipts for the major components, chassis, engine, tranny, body, etc... and sign an affidavit that I built it.:)

That may be the key, that you built it. The MSO would deal primarily with the frame. Knowing what to say and how to say it would go a long way toward getting around the problem. That same rule applies here in Hawaii as well. I can build my own trailer or frame and declare it as such. But if I walk in and say I bought this frame from a manufactuer and built my trailer, that won't fly.

If your lucky, they may never ask about the frame or major components, just ask for reciepts. I would be careful to not go into details any further than I had to.
