FE block casting question

I have a 427 block (I think) that is a cross bolt block but the casting numbers aren't back by the starter, instead over the moter mounts. It reads "C3AE" then under that it reads "6015" with no letter after the part number. The freeze plugs are not screw in. The block is .040 overbore. Is that to much on a center oiler? The builder said he has seen them go to .060 but I thought .030 was about all you could do.

From my experience .040 is at the ragged edge. We've done a few that large using a short fill of Hard Block to give the bores some added support. A sonic test is going to be the deciding factor.

Or, in motorcycle terms, "Bore it out one more time and it'll be a stack of washers."

I think the engine is a 487. It has a 4.25 stroke with a 6.7 inch rod. That gives a pretty nice rod angle, much better than the 427 windsor kits. I hope it will be a little easier on the walls. It is about a 10.2 to 1 compression ratio.

Are there any letters after the C3AE??

dlampe Dean are there any letters after the c3ae?? The block was cast in 63. It's a 427 block. It's a top oiler. as far as over boring, .030 is the max safety without sonic testing the cylinder walls for thin spots. They did also have a 65 block with the same C3ae- letter on a block. I think you know who to talk to about this, they live and own a race track in Hastings??? Hint, Hint!!!;):D Rick L. Ps seen if you can find any other motors on the flat plate area of the block. I think it's in the left front corner bottom.

Did you do the "Drill Bit" trick between the cylinders through the freeze plug hole> ?

depending on what side drill bit you can fit in between the cylinder liners through the freeze plug hole will tell you what block/cyl cores are in there.

I have seen and know that a side oiler has been bored .50 over.

give me the block. I have a set of pistons that will work.

Let me know if you are interested or if your interested in the pistons

I have heard of the drill bit or allen wrench test to see if a 390 block is a candidate to be bored to a 428. Even then it is a quick and dirty test (to rule blocks out) that should be followed up by sonic testing. What I have read is that the 427 blocks didn't have much extra meat. Sonic testing would be a must do in my warped mind.

Agreed Sonic testing would be a mandate in this scenario.
