BIG Block FE starter/quicktime bell wiring question
For those of you that are running big blocks with a quicktime bell housing:
Is there a specific starter that we are limited to purchasing because of the bell? What starter are you guys using? If we are limited to a specific starter, does it have the solenoid mounted directly to it or can I still mount the solenoid on the fire wall like the origional cars? I am running my wires without the motor and need to know how much lead and where to end the lines. Thanks Dan |
starter
I use a QT with just the plain jane factory starter, soleniod moiunted to the frame out of sight.

Stock starter in the stock location
I have a quick time bell housing on my 427 with a stock starter from the local auto supply store and it is the only thing that is easy to get at or change which is lucky since I have burned out 3 starters already. Luckily they have a lifetime warranty so I just have to take it off, bring it back and they hand me a new one. No fitment issues.

This is not FE specific--
You can always wire around it no mater what starter you are using, it just depends what solenoid you want to carry the "load" for starting the car. the solenoid is just a relay. here are a couple of helpful diags ; note the solenoid jumper. http://static.summitracing.com/globa...um-g1750_w.jpg http://www.novaresource.org/images/solenoid03.gif |
couple of things,,,,
dlotz Dan Try the Fe forum for your question about starters and QT bells. I run a tilton mini starter for the last 13 years. I did have to replace the gear drive because on of the bolts came loose and it angled the gear. If you are running a Stock 427 or 428 motor, the stock starters will work ok. If you are running a high compression motor or bigger stroker, you need a mini starter with gear reduction to turn over that motor. Large cables from the battery to the stater soleniod and the same from the soleniod down to the battery terminal on the starter. My starter is wired singlely. The soleniod on the starter goes directly to the battery terminal on the starter motor. Turn the key and both engage at the same time. Just simpler to do with limited room under the car in this location. This removes running more than 1 wire. Which ever way you go, get a starter heat shield to cover the motor and deflect heat off it. This will extent the life of the starter for years. Summit and Jegs sell the shields or raps for this.:) Rick L.
