gasket for expansion tank

Does anyone know the part number for the FE expansion tank.

And is it available in local parts stores

Doesn't it bolt on in place of the thermostat housing? A standard FE thermostat gasket should do it. In fact, FEs are a generic old-school shape and generic HELP or other gaskets should be on the rack for the picking.

The gasket or the tank itself? The gasket probably is, and you could certainly cut a gasket to fit from sheets of that gasket stuff.

There's two basic style gaskets out there, one for the pre-65 FEs and one for the post-65 FEs. It depends on the age of the expansion tank and manifold age/design. The post 65 later ones are for the late model diameter (small) thermostats and the early ones use the early BB Mopar/early FE large diameter thermostats. My expasion tank originally took the early style and I had the tank flange changes to the later (small diameter) style. Confusing, isn't it ...??

Make your own

priobe Make your own. It's easy. Get a piece of 8x10 gasket material and draw out the shape you want. Cut it with a razor. Same for the inner opening. Should take about 10 minutes, take your time. If the first one lines up perfect, trace 2 more on the same paper and you have spares. No cork. You want the heavy dark gray or black gasket material. Thin coat of RTV on both sides and let dry, (24) hours, no leaks. Just make sure to not over tighten the bolts. This will crush the gasket and cause leaks down the road. Rick L.
