Potential hood clearance issue - Edelbrock Victor vs Shelby FE manifold
Just wondering if anyone here can help:
I maybe mistaken but I read somewhere a while ago that the Shelby FE manifold is manufactured by Edelbrock - but am sort of insecure. Issue for me is that I would need to find information in regard to height comparison between the Shelby FE manifold and the Edelbrock Victor (hood clearance is the issue) Can anyone help with related information? Carsten, I don't know what brand Cobra that you have, but the Shelby FE intake fits under the hood of my Kirkham and I was told the Victor would not.

I believe there are two different Shelby FE manifolds--a dual plane and a single plane. I believe they are made by Edelbrock (or at least used to be).
The Shelby dual plane FE manifold will fit under the hood of a CSX 4000 car (I used to have this setup on my car). However, I suspect there would be hood clearance issues with the single plane manifold. |
I agree with the brand of cobra. I had to plane down the carb. surface of my Vic Jr. .0250 to fit under my LSC cobra. I think it also depends on the height of the hood scoop. I know my 2000 LSC cobra is shallower than the newer car they put out.
I can't use a turkey pan because it hits the hood up front. :mad: Put a straight edge across the block valley and measure to the front of the hood and back, as it of course slopes. |

Actually reason for me being interested in this aspect is, that I am considering to swap the carburetor set up (quik fuel) against a mass-Flo system. Talked to Chris at Mass Flo already and he has been very, very helpful in answering all my questions - only thing he cannot answer of course is if his Mass-Flo system will fit in Kirkham 427 with KCR 482 Shelby FE engine. Hood clearance with the current set up is minimal already....... So I am simply trying to avoid spending money on the Mass-Flo with the possible result that the system will not fit. The Mass-Flo system CAN be made to work with a Kirkham. It does require quite a bit of massaging. A club cobra member, I think his login is "Murphy" , has done it. I plan on using the system on a Kirkham and have already built my engine. I did preemptively mill the carb pad about a quarter inch (if memory serves). Any more than that and you end up with linkage problems. Mass-Flo also has an aluminum adapter that goes between the throttle block and the air filter which I had milled as well. Talking to Murphy, I got the impression that it's a matter of massaging all the parts and swearing alot, but it can be done. I think he is also using motor mounts that are a bit lower. The hood scoop cutout in the hood needed to be trimmed as well. Maybe he'll chime in here. By the way, with all due respect to Chris Richards, the Mass-Flo system is not quite as plug and play as you might expect although it seems to work reasonably well out of the box. I was still messing with my system before it got cold, so I don't really have it dialed in yet...I'm having some timing issues I haven't nailed down yet. phil |
Last time I read MassFlows web site. The claim was that any single plane intake could be used. All you have to do is drill and weld in the bungs. Maybe that will open up some more options for you.

I have a MassFlow on a 347 stroker. I will not say anything bad about the company, but I will say it is not a perfect system. Nor is any other system I have seen. With that said, look at this system and thread before you make a final decision.

The throttle body is shorter than a carb by about 1/2", so you should have no issues.
You could ask the guys at KMS, they've setup at least one car with the Mass-flo that I know of. Kieth Craft as well. |
if any one is interested i have the victor fe intake for fuel injection and the fuel rails from edelbrock for sale, i ws going to run massflo on my 445 fe stroker but decided to run a carb or the fast e z efi instead.

I guess I will need to take exact measurments prior to ordering. Lowering engine is no option for me - so the Mass-Flo assembly will need to be my focus. Thanks for the support - Highly appreciated! Carsten |
Shelby makes one intake that I know of and it is the same as the Edelbrock Performer RPM but has the divider milled down. It is made by Edelbrock and Edelbrock has the Victor intake that you are speaking about. It is what Chris would use with the Mass Flow. We did one on a Kirkham and milled the Victor to the same height as the Performer RPM which required about 1/2 to 3/4 inch if I remember right. What you have to watch for on the Mass Flow is that you have enough area about the Mass Flow meter to get a good reading by the meter and I think this needs to be at least an inch. The meter sets on top of the throttle body and sticks up inside the breather. So the breather that you run has some to do with it as well. You may want to run a drop breather to get all under the hood to get a 2 inch or 3 inch tall filter just make sure that you have a inch between the top and the Mass Flow meter. The other thing you have to watch for is how the air comes through the scoop and goes through the filter. We built a small damn inside the front of the breather right behind the air filter to help block the fast moving air from giving the Mass Flow meter a false reading. The Mass Flow is set pretty safe from Chris and can be tweaked by someone with some of the Mustang tuning stuff that knows what they are doing. The more time it gets on it the better it seems to run. I know on one car we put it on it seemed like the car picked up 50 HP after the first 1000 miles. I guess it takes it a little while to tune to the engine and how it is driven. Good luck. On the Kirkham we put it on we used an oval air cleaner and cut out the bottom of the hood.

I am running a Victor Jr in a Kirkham car. I enlarged the area under the scoop about 1/2 inch. Jeramy at Kirkham reworked a 2 piece turky pan to clear. I use a round K & N filter and an off-set plate[1/2 inch], also from Kirkham, to accommodate the engine off-set. Looks great! Ben

Carsten: I'm running a Holley. Be mindful of the 1/2 in engine off-set; this drove me nuts in calculating clearance. Ben
