New 390 Stroker Engine Package 8995.00
I have worked up a 390 stroker engine package that I think will be a nice reasonable FE alternative to some of the small block packages.
We will start with an original 390 block that we will bake, tumble, crack check, pressure test, tap all of the holes and then completely machine. This will include line hone, bore and hone with torque plates, square deck, hone lifter bores, tap all oil galley plugs for screw in style, do oil galley work for better oiling, deburr the block in stress areas, new cam bearings and freeze plugs, cleaned ready for assembly. We will us a Eagle or Scat 4340 steel crankshaft with Scat 4340 I-beam rods, Probe or Diamond pistons to yield about 10 to 1 compression, Mahle rings, Federal Mogul or Clevite bearings, rear seal, Comp Cams hydraulic flat tappet camshaft and lifters, Comp Cams pushrods, stock front cover, Edelbrock water pump, Pioneer damper, damper sleeve, Melling HV oil pump and HD oil pump drive, Moroso or canton front sump oil pan for Cobra, Edelbrock Keith Craft stage 1 heads with stock style rockers, complete gaskets, ARP head bolts, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Cobra LeMans valve covers, MSD distributor and Keith Craft wires, Quick Fuel vacuum seconday carburetor, NGK spark plugs, oil and filter for dyno testing, do complete dyno test on the engine to break in the camshaft, check for leaks and tune for HP, post dyno inspection to check bolt torque and leak test the engine as well as black light test for any leaks. We will do these with a .030 or a .040 bore size with a 4.250 stroke for 445 to 447 C.I. engine. This combination will make about 500HP and 525 ft/lbs of torque give or take a little depending on the camshaft used. We build our engines for each customer and this is how we decide what camshaft to use. Engines will come with parts sheet, balance sheet, bobweight sheet, dyno graph and HP sheets plus a cylinder head assembly sheet. I find that most people do not even keep up with all of the paper work that we send with the engines. This complete package will be 8995.00 and I feel that this will be the best FE engine for the price and power that you can find with quality parts and by someone who has built a few over the years. How much porting will you be doing to the heads & intake? |
The heads will be gasket matched on the intake with bowl porting on the intake and exhaust. We will do our own valve job and back cut the valves. This all makes the heads much better than the out of the box Edelbrock. The heads have enough done to them to make 500HP on this combination and more on a more aggressive engine.
You can up-grade to the stage two if you would lke for about 800.00 more. Thanks, Keith |
Incredible deal by top of the line builder if not the best. How dare you supply build sheets, why not have your customers search for part numbers for hours!!!!! My next project is going to be a beat up SPF or BDR needing paint and hopefully an engine, if I had one this would be exactly what I was looking for since I have found a top notch painter. Maybe I should look at a Hurricane and build one from scratch, no I wont get the results as SPF or BDR but it should keep my attention. Anyone looking for an engine this is a deal, even if you have a little 302 this might be the time to step up to some serious torque.

What would the price be as a turnkey engine with TWM injection? thanks |
The TWM would add a about 6000.00 to 6500.00 to the engine after credit on the original intake and carburetor. This would be with the Fast computer system, wiring harness, injectors, TWM stack set up, installation and dyno testing. It is almost as much as the engine.

Sounds like a heck of a deal for a carburated motor with those type of parts and over 500 ponies.

Is the TWM injectors the only way to go or are their other quality stacked injector systems available for less?

What if you changed the 390 block to a Genesis iron? Would that create a budget side oiler? How much would it increase the power numbers?

If you went to a Genesis or Pond new iron block you wouod be looking at about a 3800.00 up-grade for the block, you would also want to go to bigger valves in the heads and maybe a couple of other items but I would still think you would be in the 13,000.00 range. This engine would be 482C.I. and would make about 25 more HP or there close.
You could do the same engine with a 428 CJ service block for about 750.00 more and this would give you about 465C.I. engine. These make pretty good packages as well. Thanks, Keith |
There might be a few stack injection units that would be a little less but no more than a 1000.00 at the most. You have to remember that you need a computer set up to run the system as well as wiring harness, injectors, regulator, fittings, line and such to complete it. You will also need a better fuel pump on the car with a pre-filter and an after filter with a return line too the tank. You then have to mount the computer in the car and do all of the wiring and run it along with mounting all of the sensors and welding O2 sensors in the headers. The fuel injection is a pretty good job to do but when done right they will work real well. Just get ready to spend about 8000.00 to 10,000.00 extra on the complete project.

When I am ready I will contact you and further discuss my options. My concern with a carb is that the car will be sitting for several months over the winter months which I hear can create problems over a fuel injection engine.

please, my boat sits every year carburated engine for a minimuim of 6 months at a time and fires up every season. If you are concerned about carb fouling over winter Cobra may not be the car. Jam that fuel injection up the rear, the only time fuel injection would half way make sense on one of these cars is if it could pass emission inspections.

I agree that 6-10k is to much to spend on fuel injection and would be better spent in other areas of the build. I am looking in the future at having a complete turnkey GT40 built. The reason maintenance is an issue is because my last car was a Ferrari which I bought without first doing my homework. It is a crime the way your treated when owning and wanting a Ferrari serviced. I have heard great things about Keith Craft and I just learned my first lesson and have decided to go with a carb motor. Thanks for the opinions.

You can just run the carburetor dry or drain it when you put the car up for the winter. It is also a good ideal put a stabilizer in the fuel if it is going to set for very long. One other thing that is not a bad ideal to do with any car is start it up about once a month and let it run a while.
