PCV Valve orientation, does it......
.....matter if it is horzontal or vertical?
I have a threaded PCV valve and instead of drilling and tapping the crank case cover plate to mate, why can't I screw the PCV valve into the port under the rear carb (blue thunder 2x4) and run the hose from there to the crank case cover plate, which already has a nipple on it. Does it matter if the PCV valve is vertical or Horizontal? |
The PCV valve has to be vetical in order to work. They have a check valve in them to allow pressure out but nothing back in. If you mount it sideways then the ball will just float allowing air to travel both ways. To chack a PCV valve you shake it back ond forth to make sure the ball moves and is not stuck.
With that being said, alot of guys dont run a PCV valve..they just run a breather. If you have some good baffleing to keep the oil mist to a minimum just run the hose from the crank case to atmosphere with a filter on the end of it, if you can get away with that where you live. |
the down side of not haveing a PCV valve is that condensation will build in your valve covers and it looks like chocolate milk and it can get mixed in the oil........
just running a breather on the end of a hose will help but it's not like haveing a PCV... and by the way dosent your manifold have the 2 bolt plate at the rear where the tall breather bolts on to the intake??? put it there....thats where i would put it... |
Could you fit a 45 Deg andapter to the carb plate then screw the PCV valve in? This will allow you to keep a low(ish) profile on the PCV but also ensure gravity acts on the ball.

The threaded end is likely the input side. Putting in the carb base will be backward and not work.

there are in-line pcv valves that operate in the horizontal position.
