Screw threads size in timing cover holding 1965 427 FE timing pointer

My engine came without the timing pointer. I bought a new pointer from Dearborn Classics but cannot make out the internal threads of my timing chain cover. Hard to see under there if stripped or if I just need the right screws.

I think they may be 10-24 or they may be self tapping.

Thanks

I don't know which cover you have. My Shelby aluminum cover is drilled/tapped for 10-24.

Roger thanks for picking up on this question. I have the stock Ford FE timing cover. I tried a 10-24 machine screw but it only went in about 3/4 turn. If i knew the correct thread I would start with confidence to blind tap it. Access to the front is difficult as I am not on a lift. I just do not want to mess up any good threads I have or have left.

I measured these years ago and *remember* them to be 10-28 UNS
(unified screw thread)

And the factory fasteners are self tapping - or more correctly self stripping.....

The original screws for a cover with 2 were a part number 373913-s list as Screw No. 10-24 x 5/16"

Look under the 6019 parts listing at the bottom of the page.

Barry_R +1.

The little guys were self tapping (ish) they can be had from AMK if you are indeed in need of correct hardware.

Danke gentlemen, now with the screws, spark plug piston stop, degree wheel, and my new MSD timing light I can check my distributor set up!
