Catch Can Setup

Hello all,

I'm looking to install a radiator overflow catch can and am looking for some ideas.

Anybody out there have pictures of their setup?

What setup / parts have you had the best luck with?

There are a ton of options out there and am just looking to circumvent the search process a bit.

The item you linked to is just a catch can. You could use it as a recovery tank by mounting it upside down, plumbing the radiator overflow to the bottom, and leaving the petcock open as a vent. The downside is that you can't see the level and you can't easily add coolant to the recovery tank.

Use of a recovery tank is handy in a cobra to help keep the air out of the system. Since the top of the radiator is lower than some parts of the engine cooling system, if you are overflowing at the radiator cap it will systematically pump coolant out until there is air everywhere above the radiator cap. Use of a high mounted "surge tank" is one way to address the problem, but a recovery tank is the most effective at keeping air out of the system.

overflow tank

i put one from summit, a nice looking polished aluminum unit. #SUM-300101-W,$60. i was always adding coolant. i put it inside the fender with the included brackts, took the overflow hose from the expansion tank put it on the bottom hose fitting, added a hose from the top one (leave this one open) down. there is not any on the ground anymore and i havn't added any coolant since. engine warms up the coolant flows from the expansion tank to the recovery tank, as engine cools the coolant is sucked back to the expansion tank. works great and looks good.

I went down to the local parts house and bought a plastic overflow tank off the shelf. Bolted it to inside fender area. I think it was less than $10. Anyway, it looks a lot better than the Gatorade bottle I was using before...

I was considering using an empty bottle of margarita mix. Same color as the coolant :3DSMILE:

Or maybe I should use margarita mix as the coolant....hmmm, I may be on to something here :LOL:
