427 fe
Team Shelby told me to join this forum and they were very helpful. I recently bought a Chris Craft Constallation that has a pair of 427 side oilers. I wanted to repower this boat and was wondering if anyone was interested in these engines? They have 72 service blocks. There is ribbing on the passenger's side and no oil plugs on the left side but do have the screw in freeze plugs and cross bolts for the mains. I assume they are hydraulic tappets. It has 68 C8AE-H heads, 65 intake and Carter AFB carbs. Both run very well and have good oil pressure. I also have a 70 torino 429 Cobra and wasn't sure if that qualified for this club Thanks

don't mean to butt in but, the chris-craft's had 427 marine engines.
they are not side oilers. they are hydraulic blocks they oil like a 428. they are low risers, 300hp engines.
if they are priced reasonably i would be interested depending on which coast they are at. i have a marine block in my cobra now.

Not a big deal but one will most likely be set to run in reverse.

Hi,
I have 2 Chris Craft 1968 427" hydraulic side oil blocks. The owner wants $2500. Junk junk junk. The raw water coolings corrosion has wasted 2 blocks with cylinder walls as thin as .095". I know I could sleeve them down from 4.230" bore to 4.050", but then it wouldn't be a 427" Ford... What do with 2 FE 427 side oiler engines that are junk???? All baked clean and sonic checked...

FWD is right, they are NOT side oilers and Mikeforte is also right , I looked at a number of them and they will need sleeved in most cases. There is a number of them for sale in the Great Lakes area all out of boats .

A lot of the Great Lakes ones are closed cooling from Chris Crafts and they'll be OK for corrosion. But they suffer from a lot of freeze cracks as folks let the boats sit over the winter without anti-freeze or draining.

right on barry,
the last two i bought came out of florida, nice blocks, one needed to go .030 the one i used in my car cleaned up at .008 over.
aside from grenading the motor it should outlast me.....i actually prefer the marine block as far as factory blocks, because the way they are used, place throttle at a point and it stays there, they're a bugger to get out of the boat so they are usually still standard bore when they are for sale. with the advent of aftermarket cranks with SBC journals the need for a side oiler is for bragging only in a replica, no advantage unless using factory crank journal sizes.

Barry , I have looked at a number of them and old boats suffer from poor maintenance , just what causes the rust from the closed cooling systems I,m not sure but it is a problem . Rust build up at the thermostats intake area and cooling system, and as a marine tech told me ,over heating is the number one cause of failure and replacement . I have seen this a number of times when I was looking for one. If I was going to buy one I would recommend taking the engine to a shop like yours for a complete check over and disassembly. Its the best money you can spend .
