on my race car with an oil cooler, I just use duct tape on those days when the outside air temp is below about 60 degrees, pretty much anything above that, it needs no tape to keep the oil temp in the desired range.

Cool/cold oil doesn't flow thru the engine well, and doesn't lubricate as well as hot oil.......

I made an iol cooler block off plate out of polycarbonate used on machine guards.
I can remove it easily for hot summers or hard driving.
oil temps are now the same as coolant, at least.
I had a decal made that says; remove before flight for the front of the block-off plate.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I find my oil temp to run about 40 degrees cooler than my engine temp on the hiway and about 10 degrees cooler around town. Living in Arizona in the summertime, that's saying something. I do block the oil cooler in the winter when the temp gets below about 50 degrees and I leave it blocked for both days whether I'm driving or not.
