427 fe s/o sudden loss of power
Recently I have been experiencing a sudden loss of power as if it was starve for gas. My engine has a fuel pressure regulator with a Moon fuel pressure gauge and online filter, could this be the problem? I also ponder on vapor lock, for these lines are on top of the intake manifold...Any thoughts anyone? By the way this has happened twice after filling the gas tank. I am stumped by this.

Is your fuel tank vented?
When was the last time you changed the fuel filters?

Same thought, vacuum in the tank, clogged filter. |

I had a fuel line separate internally once. Engine was fine under light load but it would suck the line flat under high gas flow. It was a SOB to find. |

It does sound like a fuel filter problem. Back when CSX 3121 was a member of the family, it died on me in the middle of the Tappan Zee bridge. The cause: the little, bronze filter that fits in the fuel inlet on a Holley carb was blocked. I disconnected the line, popped the offending filter out, and was on my way.

I only have the car now for 3 months, how can I determine if the tank is vented (seems like a stupid question but I must confess--don't know) the collapse fuel line never came to mind my biggest concern is the inline filter before the fuel preassure regulator. I will check all. I just cannot picture stalling in the Tappan Zee Bridge ---yikes, no wonder people commit suicide so often here :-(((.

I've been working through the same issue. Turned out to be vapor lock caused a combination of things: winter gas, not enough cooling (fan), and the routing of my fuel line.

vern has probably put the cheapest parts he could find on the car, look at what he has done first....then if you find nothing look at what you have put on the car. my first hunch would be the fuel filter. is there a fuel pressure gauge under the hood? are the floats set right on the carb? new build? older car? always ran like this ? new problem ran fine before? hard to fix in a post with the info provided |

Tks for your insight, I am still investigating by trial and error and elimination. I had a fuel pressure regulator with an inoperable gauge, the normal school of thought questions the fact that a pressure regulator is not needed when you have a mechanical gas pum as I have. I removed it and also opened the inline filter and order a new element for it. The next issue is that this sudden loss of power happens with a full tank of gas, I don't know if the tank is vented or not, but the other day I purposedly left the gas cap slightly open and still duplicated the loss of power so it is to be surmised that the tank is vented. Regarding Vern, I am not sure he built this car.
It has numerous quality parts on it and it seems whomever built it put his good $$ in it. I will let you know how it works without the fuel pressure regulator and the new filter.

Maybe your fuel pressure guage is correct and you don't have any pressure

It seems that the sudden loss of power issues have been resolved. Verified that the tank is in fact vented. removed the old gas pressure regulator and tested the mechanical pump. The pump is putting out 7lbs of constant pressure, changed the filter element with a new stainless steel 100 microns element and installed new AN line plumbing in place of the fuel pressure regulator. At first glance a 4 mile test drive showed no hesitation nor loss of power. Keeping the fingers crossed. Tks all for the input.

This happened to me twice after fill-ups too.
The gas can go stale if kept too long in the gas stations tanks.
I will try to run down to 1/2 tank and use suncoco 260 or similar product to dilute the crap gas that I was sold!

Have you tried dumping the gas tank and cleaning it out? Had a vehicle that got one contaminated tank of fuel. Fowled everything for 3 months until I dropped the tank and cleaned out the gunk.

Had a problem with my gas cap. The venting was insufficient. So I cut an additional small groove in the plastic between the the cap and the big rubber washer/gasket.

Thanks guys the problem was fixed, a stupid defective fuel pressure regulator and a dirty filter. Tks for all the input, you guys are a great wealth of information.
