Screw in freeze plug leaking
Dad's cobra has a Genesis aluminum block. He's been loosing coolant, and I found the problem today. Freeze plug behind the starter has a leak. Any tricks to fixing this? He'll probably just put some "stop leak" in the radiator to see if that seals it off. If that doesn't work, any tricks to this operation? Where do you get a giant allen socket for those damn things?

Mat, depending on what you have available you might have a large bolt around with the proper size head. Use the head of the bolt in the allen recess. If you can weld you just have to stick something to the bolt shank to grab ahold of. You might even be ok with some large visegrips holding the shank.

The GM stop leak tablets for the Cadillac Northstar might be the best bet. We use the exact tool mentioned - a bolt head welded to a 1/2 drive deep socket, and we install them with teflon paste. Tried silicone but went back to the teflon. Still get a "weeper" on the dyno from time to time.
Seems like most OE ones I get in have signs of leakage too - rust stains from the plug... |
