octane boost
what is the best octane boost that we can still buy now that the EPA pulled all the good stuff off the shelves
|
My vote is for Lucas.
|
I like Lucas too...
|
NOS Race formula, the price has crept up a little off the shelf. Lucas is my second choice.
|
sorry, IMO... octane boost = snake oil.
I rememeber several years ago they did a test on the popular octane boosters. the best ones made a difference of a couple points, that's a 0.1 or 0.2 octane increase, not a 1 or 2. |
Read up on NOS Race formula, its points not fractions, but it costs$$ also. I know its not the complete answer to everything but test prove it helps, plus it lubricates the valves and seats. It is NOT a replacement for leaded race for sure, it Helps, and it smells good out the exhaust:D

Although Lucas Octane Boost seems to be the common choice, ask yourself if booster is really necessary. You say nothing about your compression ratio in the motor. Octane boost isn't going to give any power increase that you will ever recognize and, if not really needed, will only serve to lighten your wallet. If you never have any evidence of detonation (pinging) which you shouldn't in such a light car, you really don't need octane boost. Standard 93Octane Premium should work well with any compression ratio up to close to 11-1 in such a light car unless you are in the habit of flooring it in 4th gear while climbing a hill. LOL My 351W in my roadster has 10.75/1 ratio and I have used 91 octane fuel for 8 years and never once heard a ping even with distributor initial advance running at 12 degrees. Unless you really need the booster, save your money.

And if you do have pinging or detonation, use Xylene...117 octane

I've had good results with the race formula NOS octane booster. It does however leave a nasty reddish-orange residue in the carb. Z. |
Klotz here. And it smells pretty good coming out of the pipes....
|
A gallon or so of 118 octane leaded race gas with each tank.:MECOOL:

Not cheap but Kemco is the premium stuff. Have to mail order it by the case. Has real old-fashioned lead in it so it's not technically legal for the road and would be instant death for cat. converters. Here is one source.
