For that money I'd go with the Genesis block. They are very nice blocks. I don't think that block is worth $4k maybe $2k tops if it was perfect and std bore. If you have to have a actual Ford sideoiler block there's a guy on that other forum selling good used blocks from $3k to $4k+ for NOS. Shop around.

As I said in post #2, this is exactly what it is... a S/O casting finished as a top/center-oiler... commonplace in Ford's lineup. Years ago, I had one of these that was from an irrigation pumping system. Many of these engines weren't finished with cross-bolts, but they were added later, which could explain the newer looking spacers in the cross-bolts. Ford sold them as industrial/marine engines. Definitely buy the new block at that price... this one's not worth it in my opinion. Quote:
This may not be possible with the way the motor mount bosses were flycut and drilled into the side-oiler passage along the right side of the block... though, from the photo, this one doesn't look as bad as the one I had. |
Pretty common for a Chris Craft or other marine block. Ne real reason to convert - they run fine as-is. Not worth big dollars though - should be +/- 30% less than the $3600 bucks for a Genesis.

If you are dying to have a side oiler and have $4k to spend, I would suggest patience. I have seen two NOS side oiler blocks bring less than that on eBay in the last 9 months. And there was one advertised here that could have been bought for that.

Where are you??
hkmp5 Mike where do you live? you left no info of what coun try you are in. If you are abroad, this would be a good deal if the average 427 block is not laying around. I have to go back to an original question, Who's car manufacture and what you are looking to do with the car?? I think Ponds or Genises has a stamp date cast into their block. You have not said if this is going to be a stroker motor, which alot of guys are doing. Make more power, run the motor with hydro roller lifters, still turn a safe 6,000 rpms, run on pump gas with maybe an additive. Be in the 550/550 club without and problems. Answers to these question will answer weather to buy this block or not. I would still not buy it without a sonic check either way. In my life, $4,000.00 dollars is alot of late nights working for 2 years. Home bills and other half come first. This was a dream and now a hobby for me. Rick L.

Will be on here shortly to have you guys help determine what type Cobra I have. I was looking for a value and if the block was a s/o or not. Thanks to all for the answers and info I have learned a lot. Passed because it was way to high for what it is. Mike |
