Header bolts??
I picked up some ARP 100-1102 header bolts for my motor with ERA headers. However, the ERA headers have a really nice, thick flange and these bolts only engage about 3 or 4 threads at most. If I use a gasket I'll probably be down to 2 or 3 threads.
Does anyone know of another set number for an ARP set that has a longer threaded shank? Other options other than hardware fastners? Thanks |
ARP sells fasteners in packs of 5 based on bolt size and length if your not using the standard ones for a particular engine.
1\4 to 1\2 diameter and up to 6 inches in length. the ARP site has the catalog online |
OK - I'll try their website. Hopefully they have the small hexhead bolts in various lengths.

You want one inch long-search Mr Gasket. Mine have reduced hex diameter. You don't need ARP quality here, just grip length.
You want them to go through the head bolt boss like this: http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/v...0013Medium.jpg Most all the header bolts are only 3/4" long. These have not loosened in about 10 years. Oh and coat them with antiseize... |
Curiosity. Is there an individual gasket at each exhaust port?

Olddog, I have seen individual gaskets as well as the four port per gasket. Some do not use a gasket and rely on the machined surfaces of the head ports and ex. manifold.
If running an aluminum head the gasket protects the exhaust ports machined surface. The steel header expanding / contracting at different rates than the aluminum cyl. head can scrub or work this surface. |
chas, are your pushrods rubbing? they look mighty close ....

Bolts
I use the 1 inch bolts with copper gaskets an had any trouble with them backing off, an I have aluminum heads, the 3/4 do not give you but 1 or 2 threads. I have had no problems for about 3 or 4 years. ;)

Stage 8 locking header bolts. You'll never have to put a wrench on them again...

If mounting clearance is no problem I suggest using a stud kit with the serrated washer/nut. (Don't know the name). You tighten them with your finger and need a spanner (7/16) to release them!
If your clearance is critical (for mounting and head dimension of the bolt), I use hex head ("Allen") bolts with reduced head. 3/8" flange is a good choice, however do individual headers need that? I used sealer, no gaskets. Lastly, I had a bit of misalignment from the 4-into-1 collector slip in. So I left 3 out of 4 headers slightly loose, slipped the collector on and then tightened the header flanges. Never gave me any problem. I do not recommend the flange mount (headers to sidepipe), in fact strongly advise against it in spite of 100s of cars using them. Slip-in is the only correct way. |
