1968 427 marine engines value? Help!
Hi I have 2 1968 427 out of a chris craft I live in michigan and have no real idea of value or were i should look to sell them. I am scrapping the boat and would like to get rid of the engines. I have heard numbers from $1,000 to $6000. Let me know if you can help
Thanks, Adam |

Some boats used twin engines, and one would be mounted backwards. To determine if the engine you located is one of those, the distributor would be a good starting point, since it determines if all the internals rotate in the opposite direction from standard. Unless you plan to drive more in reverse than forward.

Did the boat have a closed loop anti-freeze system or did lake water circulate through the engines?
Did the boat ever run on salt water? Does one engine rotate the opposite to other? Boat engines can have a lot of rust in the cooling system and the cylinder walls may get too thin. A lot of 427 FE boat engines look like they are a side oiler design, but they were not drilled and are center oilers. I would say they are not worth as much as a car engine. I expect a lot of people would want to disassemble and inspect it before they would shell out much cash. |
The boat is at a friends house i am working on pics and numbers
I will post when i get them.

personally i like them....i have one in my car....well the block anyway.....
i would be interested in one of them. i could use a spare block. the rest of the marine stuff of the motor is basically of no value to me. here is an example, i got 2 blocks a couple years ago, i was able to inspect for issues before hand, i paid 1000 each for them so if your looking to get alot of money for them, you may be in for a surprise, they are low risers and have no high performance items on them....300 HP Fred |
We use the blocks often. Other than the block itself the rest of the engine is pretty
much Ford truck type parts. Most often they seem to be cast as side oilers but machined as center oilers. Brass freeze plugs. They need to be carefully inspected for freeze cracking - a very common problem with marine engines in this area. Without inspection a value is hard to establish, but a thousand for a good 427 block would be too low, and $2500 would be too high. |
Barry's advice gives you a good honest indication. If they have been fresh water cooled, I would be interested in a block from either motor or maybe a short motor (if its the conventional rotation one). I'm not sure what the market is like for all the other engine parts if separate them from the blocks.

There were sooo many FEs used in so many disciplines, it is very tough to nail down values without a thorough review by a good engine person, and even then sometimes hell can brake loose.

Not enough to retire.... many think they have a gold nugget with SO

Now Ned, think that over again. REVERSE rotation, not mounted. I've yet to see a Chris Craft Cabin Cruiser with a prop in the back, and one amidship. Unless you guys in Cali. do something different !
