starter problems continued
i wanted to start a new thread, i received a email back from keith craft said they had no issues but use a powermaster starter never use a cvr. if i mill .125 off the aluminum plate on the cvr it will cover the flywheel but i still have a major depth or mesh issue if i measure the point of the ring gear tooth to the valley on the starter gear i get .080 the mesh is to wide and would end up chewing up gears?. i purchased a powermaster 9606 today what a piece of crap compared to the cvr it has a 3 hole mount and one of the holes did not even line up with the block plate but still has the same mesh problem.
i give up i received a email from prestolite regarding the quicktime bellhousing mayby they know something but were closed today for good friday. the block plate on the quick time is .120 i think someone told me a oem is .074 but i dont think this would give me a better mesh pattern? i think i have another bad bellhousing. but a stock starter from the 60's worked fine. i did not want to cut and grind anything until i find out if i can get a replacement that will work. |
i don't know if your situation is the same or the parts crossover, but i read somewhere the hi torque starters were the same as diesel starters, probably for the sbf, something to ponder.

i think a lot of the starters are the same the difference is how far the drive comes out and the aluminum plate which is specific to diff applications.

Wrench,
When I had my 418 stroker I needed a gear drive starter for it and I went to a local shop that built me one and when I put it on the teeth on the Bendix wouldn't engage the flywheel. I called them and they sent a tech to look at it. He got under the car and pulled the starter to see if I had anything lined up wrong and immediately told me he saw the problem and he would be back in about 30 minutes. He took the starter and I asked him what was wrong and they had put a front on it for an automatic transmission instead of the 5 speed and he said that front wasn't as long as i needed and he would put one on that would work. He came back in around 30 minutes and I could see the difference in the starters length. He put it back in the car and wired it up and it is still in there today. I am sure that this isn't anything to do with your problem but I had a thicker block plate than was standard. I wish we could still get service like that here today. Ron ;) |
My OE style starter would not start my 428 strocker when it was hot. I replaced it with the Powermaster OE style from Summit. It looks OE and works like a charm.

i found out a stock starter that came from a 60's 428 4 spd car works, i just dont want to run a stock starter, and i am a glutten for punishment i just want to find out whats wrong. after trying the oem i was sure it was the cvr but the powemaster did not work either so now i think it is a problem with the block plate and bell housing. i have to call prestolite on monday they left me a e mail to call them but were closed on friday, so we will see.

You may want to read my past post on this topic... Is went though a lot of BS, three starters and and broken flywheel teeth before getting mine "right". After a lot of research, a new flywheel and .....and new starter from Rob at robbmc startery, I am good and my car fires up as it should (I only run 10.5 compression but they OEM starter was straining to say the least).
Call Robb - he was one of the first folks that really helped me out and the only one who was consistently recommended....hope this helps. RobbMc Performance Products - RobbMc Mini-Starters |
