Now all we, er, I mean, you, yes, you need is some magnesium Halibrands to finish it off.

One of these days I'm going to have to build a SOHC engine in an effort to one up you and try and keep up with the Jones-es.

Stentor 06-27-2012 05:52 PM

Very nice--your K-car is going to be a beast!

You running Billboards?

Ya see?? I didn't bring those up! Now you have to STFU about mags...

patrickt 06-27-2012 06:42 PM

Did you get an answer on how much the rear can handle? With all that power, if you put really sticky tires on there, and then you have a momentary lack of judgment and punch it, you're liable to blow everything apart back there.:(

ERA Chas 06-27-2012 07:20 PM

Rodney-
1.Do not have a momentary lapse.
2. Thank The Almighty you have Carnac The Magnificent to alert you to these perils.............
You foolish lad.

Deep down, I think you agree with me.;)

No I don't -which is why I put a bulletproof rear in mine-with 200 less HP! You can live with that power level if you know how to use it and equip for it.
I don't think he built (and spent for) it for lawn chair and wowing 'em at the supermarket use.
He can run 9's with that power by rolling out at idle and short-shifting. Hotfingers does it with spray and a SBC.
It would be a shame if that power were NOT used and enjoyed-like going to the haberdashers...:JEKYLHYDE

patrickt 06-27-2012 08:06 PM

I still can't tell what you're saying. Do you think he should stay with his stock Kirkham rear, and just be prudent, or should he upgrade his rear to handle the power even if he just indiscriminately stomps on it?

ERA Chas 06-27-2012 08:49 PM

He can do either. And NOBODY with that power should use it indiscriminately.
Rodney never seemed the type to be a hoople like that. He's always been a straight and smart shooter on here.
His dream has been to have the Paxton legend and he's got it now. He could have had 800HP other ways so it's not about the number for him. It's the way that motor makes its power that's unique to his build and his idea.
Of course we all know his dream is incomplete without magnesium wheels...:)

lovehamr 06-27-2012 09:12 PM

Rodney that's going to be one fine ride! Can't wait to see the video of the dyno session.

Oye vey. Didn't we see a Kirkham with a 720 HP stroked aluminum FE engine beat a new 458 Ferrari Italia with at least one 10-second run down a 1/4 mile strip in Las Vegas not too long ago? The Kirkham rear can take plenty. Thank you.

Didn't you just tell me to shut up about the mags? It applies to you too.

philminotti 06-27-2012 10:55 PM

Great numbers rodney. You obviously ran into the same limitations that keith encountered on his big inch twin paxton motor. Should be plenty to scare the snot out of you! Still though, I'd love to see what one of these modern strokers with state of the FE art CNC heads would do with a monster 8-71 blower sitting in top of it!!

rodneym 06-27-2012 11:07 PM

I think Chas' last post hit the nail on the head. Every damn word.
Except for hoople. The only thing I know about hoople is that Mott was one. :p

Stentor - Running BBs and Avons. If only one set were magnesium...

Patrickt - I never got around to Kirkham about it but I will. But after seeing what's been done with the 720HP Kirkham at the strip, I'm not overly concerned.

Phil - Yup, same limitations as Keith on those purdy relics.

tboneheller 07-07-2012 02:38 PM

Your engine looks great! I have a couple of those old Paxtons out in the garage. Maybe one day I can put a twin s/c set-up together.

Mark Thompson 07-07-2012 07:59 PM

Rodney

This is an awesome project. Tom Lucas is an excellent builder; he built a great engine for me. It has 1300 miles and runs great. He was also outstanding during debug. He deserves more attention on this forum than he gets. In terms of the Kirkham drivetrain, as others have pointed out it is extremely well engineered and pretty well bulletproof. In this case, you do get what you pay for. I hope to see your car in person at some point.

The Kirkham Super Snake had me itching, so I contacted Tom Lucas.

The news I got was, "the engine is in"...."a few mods left"....and Chas, are you reading..."it FITS under the stock hood!" :MECOOL:

Here's a pic...

Phew! I'm not a big fan of the bigger hood.

Good stuff Rodney.

Yes I am Dude.:)
Another reason to consider the fans Rick uses to vent underhood.
Ask Tom if he cleaned-up the runners in that Dove T/W-mine was full of casting slag and needed port matching. You're pumping a minor tornado through it.
Like The Police; "I'll be watching you..."
