Difference between CVR 5048 and 5049

I'm getting ready to start on my 427 engine project and I have an extra CVR 5048 starter left over from another engine. From what I've read on CVR's site, they use a common motor so one would assume the drive-end mounting plates would be different between 5048 and 5049. I thought the only thing left to do was order a drive-end plate for a 5049 but CVR only calls out a 048DE.

Can this be used for an FE motor or will I have to use another starter?

the 5048 is for the ford 351m,400,429,460.
the 5049 is for the 390,427,428.

Thanks for the response but I didn't think I explained my question with the proper details.

If I have a 5048 starter, is it possible to convert it to a 5049 by replacing the drive-end mounting plate?

i have the 5049m for my 445fe, i would have to say it depends on how many teeth you have on the flywheel and how far the drive comes out. i know what your saying because the the aluminum plate that bolts to the front is not that expensive, best bet would be to call cvr and say what they say.

I guess I should have been a little more patient and waited for CVR to respond to my question because I just got a call from them. I talked with Bruce at CVR and he said the ONLY difference between the two models is how the drive plate is index to the motor.

In other words, the 5048 is pre-set at the factory to fit a 351C series engine and the 5049 is set to fit a FE motor. I hope this little bit of info is useful to someone….I’m happy knowing I don’t have to spend a few extra bucks on a new starter. Now if I can just nail-down a SO block, life will be grand!
